Once in '94 or '95 I was on a Coast Guard icebreaker in the Hudson River around Kingston NY on a day when the high was 4F and we got that sea-smoke-in-the-open-lane thing going. Otherworldly.

It had to be 1994, that was the worst that I ever saw Newburgh Bay. I was in Newburgh yesterday but forgot my camera :arrowhead: but I didn't see any open water. I'll remember my camera next weekend hopefully there will still be some ice left.....:scooter:

Yes, cool it is. This year's ice is harder and thicker than anyone remembers. There is no open water at all. Lots of fox and coyotes crossing the ice and preying on the geese/swans & gulls who need open patches for protection.

The deer are crossing the ice too. They are having trouble browsing with the deep cover.

Vim Toot!

Give us a toot as you pass by! Hope all is well by you and yours.

Some impressive plunges since yesterday's highs. Just a few select stations:

Here, we dropped 31 degrees from yesterday's max to this morning's minimum (high 8, low -23).

Plainfield, VT dropped 38 degrees, Union Village, VT, a 40 degree drop and Woodstock, VT, a whopping 44 degree spread from high to low.

Edit: Lebanon, NH with a 45 degree swing! (17, -28)

Hey Rob!

I'll bet you're enjoying your winter winter down here. I should have brought my sled with me. Better sledding down here.

Yeah, I'm loving this one, it reminds me of my northern New England roots. It's not that often we get snowfall on top of snowpack down this way so this is a treat. I've had snowcover since 12/26, about a 12-15" snowpack with much larger drifts around. Hopefully things will get better up your way.

Here are the BTV observer reports so far.

Looks like Issland Pond was -26. The local radio was reporting there was -42 in Barton and -34 in Wheelock.

We were -18.5f when I left this morning. The car was a little reluctant but got going pretty well. We have warmed to -10 here in St. J and it doesn't feel that bad out with the sun.

Sometime between the gusts last night it dropped to -20 IMBY, and the high was 2. The mean of -9 was 21F below my 13-yr smoothed avg for Jan 24, first 20F or greater negative departure since Dec 2008. (My avg bottoms out at 11.3 on Jan 21, so we're already headed up, according to the averages, though models and forecasts imply otherwise.) Got down to -10 by 7:30 this evening, but at my 9 PM obs time there was a thin overcast (brighter stars dimly visible) and temp had popped up to -6.

00z EC is a nice hit for CNE and throws a little bone for NNE too.

The 1" QPF line runs from about BGR-LCI-EEN-PSF.

0.50" runs HUL-HIE-DDH

And then the gradient picks up decently after that. NW VT and N ME are 0.05"-0.10".

Not hard to believe that I'm riding the Euro on this one. I'm keeping my 6-10 call I gave my co-workers yesterday.

made it down to -8 this morning. Up to -1 now with clouds moving in. Hoping to get a little NW bump in all of the models today but time is running out. Euro is looking pretty good around here but still cutting it a little close for my liking. would really help if the other models came on board today.

Event totals: 0.9” Snow/0.04” L.E.

Tuesday 1/25/2011 6:00 A.M. update: Steady light snow was falling this morning at observation time, and there were some fairly large flakes up to ~12 mm diameter in there. Almost an inch (0.9”) of snow had fallen by that point. Surprisingly, when our bus stopped at the Richmond park and ride it didn’t seem like much of anything was falling, nor did I see any cars with new accumulation on them, so I’m not sure how much snow was received there. It was a similar situation here on the UVM campus in Burlington, although I did see some light accumulations on vehicles.

With regard to accumulations at the house, it’s felt like pulling teeth this past week getting to the 100-inch mark for season snowfall, but this event finally put things over the top. We have definitely fallen way off the strong pace for snowfall that we were setting for the first half of the month. However, since there haven’t been any huge Januarys in the five years that I’ve been keeping snowfall data here, we just set a January record for snowfall in my data set with 51.2 inches, passing January ’08-’09 which finished at 50.9 inches. There are still almost seven full days left this month, so everything beyond this point will be establishing the new high mark for January snowfall in my records.

Checking on average snowfall, my records indicate that we are still ahead of average snowfall pace by 13 days, and behind the pace of the ’07-’08 and ’08-’09 La Niña seasons by about 10-15 inches.

The current clipper system is our 20th snowfall event of the season based on my breakdown of storms, and in that category we are right on pace with last season (20th event in ’09-’10 was January 26-27), but we’ve had some really protracted systems with larger accumulations (like the retrograde events) this season. The snowfall breakdown is in my signature, the next event (#21) starts a second column in there, so that’s another good benchmark to have reached.

Some details from the 6:00 A.M. observations are below:

New Snow: 0.9 inches

New Liquid: 0.04 inches

Snow/Water Ratio: 10.0

Snow Density: 22.5%

Temperature: 3.2 F

Sky: Light Snow (2-12 mm flakes)

Snow at the stake: 18.0 inches

Models constistant miss for Central NH run after run day after day except for that one crazy DR NO. I have to go with no snow getting into the lakes region or anywhere NW of that except. It would be stunning to see the Euro solution come to fruition and bring snow into NNE after what we have seen. I would have thought the 6Z's would have started coming around if the Euro was right. Yeah I know its an off run, blah, blah blah. 12Z's will be interesting to see which camp starts giving in.

Bit of snow this AM but not worth measuring. Have a good day guys!

Got home last evening and it was already -11F. The daytime high here yesterday was -1.

However, in the hours leading to bedtime, the glass rose and by the time I hit the rack, it was up to -5F. Now at zero with light snow. Haven't measured yet but it looks like an inch or less...

We didn't get above zero yesterday either. Pretty decent stretch of zero or below hours, from about 3:00 pm Sunday through at least 8:00 am today.
