Allenson
Zzzzzzzzzzz. Cloudy, 29F. Few grains in the air from time to time. Gee, the water content in the snowpack went up quite a few notches in the past 24............
MaineJayhawk
Storm cleanup fail. Sun was M.I.A., temps were a tepid 35F and the crap that fell has melded nicely with the frozen mass that inhabited my walkway and driveway prior to the storm. powderfreak
Zzzzzzzzzzz. Cloudy, 29F. Few grains in the air from time to time. Gee, the water content in the snowpack went up quite a few notches in the past 24............ This week has been huge in developing a durable snowpack in this area. My totals for the past 6 days are exactly 20" of snow and likely over 2" of liquid. We got about an inch of liquid during the mid-week storm (12.5" of snow) and then another inch of liquid last night (7.5" snow). Also, if my crude snowfall tally is anywhere near correct, then we have now passed 100" of snowfall on the season at my location (104" to be exact)... J.Spin is still about 2 feet ahead of me and I think I need to move about two miles closer to the Green Mountain spine to catch him (the gradient is tight on this eastern side). What had been a very fluffy snowpack prior to these two storms, is now a very dense snowpack that has some heft to it. I like how things have evolved over the past week because we are suddenly in very good shape heading into the spring-time snows of later February, March, and April. I measured 29-30" on the ground around 950ft at Topnotch Resort and Spa (on the Mountain Road here in Stowe) today where I work on the weekends. Have a couple pictures I'll post later. simpsonsbuff
As I was telling Allenson, a crazy storm last night. I figured more than 4 fell (due to the fact that about 3 fell before the changeover, then definitely more than an inch of a combined sleet/snow fell the rest of the storm), but the Hanover COOP reported 6. Seemed a little high to me. EDIT: Seems North Pomfret, VT (which is only 10 miles from here (and basically same elevation) got 5.3 inches... That seems closer to the truth. As for Monday Night/Tuesday, looks like all snow... I think 3-5, but wouldn't argue with someone who put out a 2-4 forecast.

That's what I'm going with for tomorrow evening through Tuesday evening. I figure up here we'll get around 1/4" of liquid but unsure of what ratios might be... figuring 12:1 is a good place to start, increasing to 16:1 towards the end. Bust potential is there, but mostly on the high side I think as some models indicate a decent period of upslope snow as winds crank NW once the storm gets its act together off-shore. With left over synoptic moisture in place, I could see the mountains pulling a few extra inches of upslope fluff out of this... certainly not an uncommon scenario in these parts. mreaves
As somone said earlier in the thread, it was quite an interesting mixture of precip types on in the new accumulation. I had a class at 8:30 in Winooski to be at so I was out before my plow guy to clean off the car and it was almost like an archaeological dig through the layers. A couple of inches of heavy wet snow on top of a layer of sleet and ice of some fluffier stuff that fell at first. There were even some of those styrofoam like balls somewhere in the stack. I think we had about 6 inches total. This stuff is so heavy compared to the previously existing snowpack that I was half wondering if compressed it so much that there was a net loss in snow depth. This stuff is so heavy compared to the previously existing snowpack that I was half wondering if compressed it so much that there was a net loss in snow depth. that's what I thought, too. We had a quick 4.5 inches from 2:30 yesterday to 5:30, and then I brushed off the board. This morning, there was 3 inches on the board, with 0.6 inches of that being ice. But when I walked the driveway (on the way to finding the plow truck man stuck in a drift ), I certainly didn't walk through 7.5 inches of snow, and the whole yard looked a bit more packed down than it was before the storm. The line of thunderstorms that blew through the lower Champlain Valley was something else. A sudden gust of wind, pinging on the windows, and then multiple bursts of lightning. Very cool evening. klw
We we ended up with 7" from the storm. There was a good crust layer about 2 1/2 inches down so I don't know how much compression happened to what fell before the mix. We had 3 inches in the first 2 hours. I quit early and went to bed only to get woken up by the thunder sleet at 10. Amazing light show. Eventually I fell back to sleep only to get awoken at 2 by a wierd hammering-type noise. I went downstairs just in time to get startled as all the snow on one side of the house came sliding off. Freaked me out. I had gone out and found the last store in NE with roof rakes and had taken most of the snow off the barn right before the snow hit. I got to one side of the house but still have the back half to do. I am running out of places to put it all. I measured about 26" in the back field this morning.

I think we need to hold an intervention with the Hanover coop person. Only 0.22" of liquid reported with the pasting of Saturday night to go along with the 6" of snow when everyone else was at nealy an inch of liquid and 6" or less of snow. And yes, Pomfret is close by.... Taking today off from work--much needed!

J.Spin
Event totals: 0.2” Snow/Trace L.E. Monday 2/7/2011 6:00 A.M. update: I noticed some flurries around last night, and I found a couple tenths of an inch of snow on the board this morning with continued flakes in the air. Similar steady flakes were seen here in Burlington around 7:00 A.M., but that activity has now stopped. It sounds like this precipitation is associated with mid the mid and upper level flow that we’re currently seeing. We’re under a winter weather advisory for the next event, and I’ve pasted in a couple of the BTV NWS graphics below: Some details from the 6:00 A.M. observations are below: New Snow: 0.2 inches New Liquid: Trace Temperature: 28.0 F Sky: Flurries Snow at the stake: 28.0 inches

adk
@Jspin....thanks posting that NWS map. Seems a little high. 8.8 in the high peaks with only 5-6.6 in the Spine doesn't register properly with my brain. But whatevers...I'd be inclined to say 4-6 overall. Allenson
The sun is poking her nose out here a bit. Up to 33F with some drips off the roof. I'm hoping the barn will slide as I've yet to rake/shovel that--about 2' on it. I've never raked the barn as it always slides on its own but not yet so far during this stretch. I'll get at least the edges later today and give it a head-start. I don't know about you guys but I'm ready for a nice, drying cold front. This cruddy sou'westerly air is getting stale. Looks like that'll happen after whatever comes through tonight/tomorrow....

tamarack
Didn't get to attack the driveway until 2 PM yest, and no 40F softening - high was 31. The snowblower did okay at very low speed but anything more and it wanted to climb atop the crust. 6" shouldn't take 80 minutes to finish, but this was not the ordinary 6". Excellent throw distance, however. The 23" at the stake (by aft., was 25" at Sunday dawn) is quite representative of overall snow depth, but where I dug to get a snow sample was only 21" - hit a hump in the lawn, I guess. That 21" had 4.28" LE; projecting that to 23" would be 4.69". We've had just over 5" total LE starting with the storm of 12/22-23, and only the mini-thaw of 1/1-2 plus any sublimation to remove water, thus either of the above LE amounts would be reasonable. If the circa 1/4" qpf works out with the nice midlevel temps, 3-4" seems reasonable for MBY. After that, another run at -20 for Thurs/Fri mornings, perhaps, and only mini-thaws out thru day 16 on 12z gfs. Beginning to look like a year when snowpack lasts well into April (as it did in 01, 05, 07-09).
simpsonsbuff
I'm looking at the data and agree with BTV here... NAM came in wetter... as did the rest of the mesos... 3-5 still seems like a good call here... and a WWA should be issued.
