MN Transplant
Even beat 1996 (-43 on 2/1, -45 on 2/2) The -46 degree low was tied for the lowest on record at the International Falls Airport. The official observing station was moved to the airport in 1939. This is tied with the -46 degree reading from January 6, 1968.

trapperman
Very impressive... but... Maybe someone with better access to historical data can verify this. I was talking to my dad earlier today about the cold snap (impressive but only for a couple days) and he mentioned he believed January '62 or '63 the temp never got above zero at MPX. Just to put this in a historical perspective. Maybe he's just getting old and his memory fails him, lol. But I know the 60s and 70s had some brutal cold up here. I also remember late December '91 we had 4-5 days with highs in the teens below zero (at MPX). Haven't seen that kind of cold since... My reading just north of the metro was -29 this morning. Felt kinda good...probably gonna have to put an extension on my ice auger soon...

bluewave
That's it. Thanks Bluewave. I really liked the ice fog photos that the observer took in the NWS link. I will have to travel to see that kind of cold.
aslkahuna
The 1962-63 Winter was a ball buster of a cold winter east of the Rockies. It was my first winter outside of CA so I remember it well-I was in MO at the time and saw plenty of subzero there. Steve
