1/21/11 Storm Discussion III

We've gone through a 40 lb bag of bird food in about three weeks in the back yard feeder (plus we have separate feeders with nyjer and sunflower)! More birds keep showing up every week, and now we're getting a few that we didn't have last year. The snowpack is generally well over a foot before today's storm, and it's not going away soon. We see hawks circling above sometimes, but haven't seen any in the yard lately - at least not when we've been there. Is that a snow bunting in your avatar? Never seen one in person.

I bet. Keep it up, good work. Yes it is - lucky bird it seems this year for snow and they are sticking around southern Stratford in good numbers. Go find any grass-y open area that has been blown free of snow or anywhere a plow has ripped up grass near it. I don't know MA as well but that would be your best hope for one.

yeah...like I was saying a week ago when we dipped below zero...some of the shoreline towns can really radiate amazingly well when you get just a mile or two inland. I was completely caught off guard with how cold it got 1/17/09...forecast was for around zero.

BTW...can we move talk of next week's storm to another thread? Either Tips or Ginx's?

I'm in north Stratford but I did not do even close to that well. That's why 2004 stuck out in my mind and BDR backed it up, albeit to a slightly lesser degree than MBY. Yeah, we should move on here...

Thanks for the tip. We have a hilly golf course nearby where we go cross country skiing - I'm sure there must be a few spots that have been blown clear.

Gents and Gals,

I stumbled upon this during a search for snow reports this am....I found it at ALY's web site. Pretty cool...probably not new news for most.

Here's the screen capture.

Shows a few things very well. Bob was RIGHT on the edge...when it changed it missed to his east by a few miles. Second, a lot of coastal CT got hosed.

The intersection point on 495 is rte 44...that's right near the state police barracks, and right about where the change line took up residence.

Strange pseudo dry slot raced north after midnight, cut off the approaching snow for a few hours, well it kept snowing a filling in back across Fairfield Co. That was the difference between 3" and 5-7".

Awesome, thanks. Looks great for today. I wonder why the W coastline did so much better than the E?

Hmm, I thought as much and mentioned it earlier but am surprised to the degree that occurred. I was watching it until around 2 and said the pixie dust we were getting was helping us out surprisingly, but that's quite a bit. I suppose it kept going after I went to bed then whereas it did stay dry the entire time there. Interesting, thanks.

Intersting map. I've never seen that one.

Overall that was a nice little system. Gave the kids a 4th snow day in 8 days, and refreshed the snow lost in the rain.

. . . The epic winter of 2010-11 bus rolls on.

You must be having a pretty good season down there.

I'm liking it. We were at the low end for the region during the post Christmas blizzard, but that was as much because of ratios as anything and that snow is still present as the bottom few inches of icy base in our snowpack. We've been doing a lot better since then. The 1/12 storm was one of the best we've had in the past 15 years; I even liked this one better than 12/09. I haven''t done a core, but between the snowfall and rain that has soaked in, there is a lot of water in the current snowpack...more normal for somewhere well inland and north of here. I may sample it tonight or tomorrow just to see.

I've noticed that you have been cleaning up too.

But that map will change when the finals are in. Many reports are from early morning.
