floodwave
I am not home now, but the last true white thanksgiving in Allentown (1 in on ground) was indeed 1989.
Quakertown needs snow
So Quakertown got snow. I slept through our 15 minutes of fame this morning. Score one for the wrf-nmm on this one, it had more of the isothermal at 32F fcst sounding than the gfs and somewhat the euro. The latter were too top heavy with the warm air advecting in above 850mb. yeah the nam really showed the cold air dam well yesterday... gfs went out to lunch... glad you got some extra zzzzz's young man.. MGorse
Well, that was nice to see this morning as it snowed here for about an hour. It was coming down pretty good a few times as well, with even the grass, trees, deck, and cars turning a bit white. It then changed to sleet then to a cold plain rain. I am not all that surprised about the snow on the front end as there was evaporational cooling galore. Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

floodwave
It's good to watch this because I am in the camp there will be more storms like this during the winter. I am not a full time meteorologist now but in the 90s the NAM/ETA hit the cold air east of the Allegheny better than MRF/GFS. Any concurrance here? _AR_
This was the noon forecast update for my area: Thanksgiving Day: Rain, snow, and sleet likely before 4pm, then freezing rain and sleet. High near 39. Southeast wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible. Tonight: Freezing rain and sleet before 7pm, then rain and sleet between 7pm and 10pm, then rain after 10pm. Temperature rising to around 40 by 4am. South wind between 6 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. Seems like little to no precip is falling currently. The rain hasn't washed away the snow on the ground yet.

The NAM does seem to do better with CAD in the short range because of its higher resolution. Also, I've heard talk that this winter could bring similar overrunning type storms, as far as the mix battle zone goes. Hopefully we can push that battle ground to the south as the winter goes on. Yeah the nam was pretty much cutting edge in the 90s, the old EE rule to used to work nearly every time. Now its inconsistent. Take a look at 06z run (I know off hour), how much it cut back on pcpn and how much slower it was from the 00z run.
_AR_
Interestingly enough, both my thermometers' readings have been slowly decreasing. Now down to about 33.0F again. Was above 34 earlier.
floodwave
Yeah I was amazed on the Combined force of the evaporational and dynamic cooling with this event. Indiana and Illinois yesterday had unforecasted freezing rain. Cincinnati had sleet for a half hour or hour.

Eskimo Joe
This was a nice surprise. I was hoping to see a brief period period of sleet at the onset here in Philly, but did not expect a 2 hour wintry mix! Hopefully We get a few good plowable events

Big Jims Videos
1-2 inches of snow fell where I was today reporting in West Hazleton. By 1 it had all turned back to rain---but it was cool to see and do my first snow story for wnep. Happy thanksgiving everyone!
_AR_
Big Jim, you work for WNEP now? Are you on the air? Snow is still on the ground here despite the rain and rising temps. Expect it to be gone by the time I wake up tomorrow. It was nice to go out and burn some brush piles this morning in the snow. Too bad it wasn't the first day of deer season! wederwarrior
Its a turkey day miracle! There is still snow on the ground here! Went down to Yardley for family feast, and snow there just barely covered the mulch, then turned to rain.... I thought it would have melted with temps on the rise....It might be the triptofan coma I just woke up from, BUT the patio is still covered! Happy Thanksgiving to all!
