stockmanjr
What's going on with the winds down in Hatteras? Just saw that the ferry has been suspended due to high winds. The picture with snow by the lighthouse is amazing!
SnoJoe
Just talked to the caretaker of my beach house in Salter Path and he said that he measured 5 inches on the boardwalk that drops down to the beach. Pretty impressive being oceanfront. I've owned the place for 12 years and have never been there when it has snowed.

eyewall
What's going on with the winds down in Hatteras? Just saw that the ferry has been suspended due to high winds. The picture with snow by the lighthouse is amazing! Gusts have been around 35-40 knots in the open water (Gale) not sure what their running limit is though. I think it also has to do with the winds combining with heavy snow bands reducing the vis on top of higher seas.

cheapdad00
Thanks guys. Driving in the evening was a bit freaky with the heavy snow Yeah, in a lot of cases its easier to see if you turn the headlights off (provided there is enough ambient light around you). Coach McGuirk
Good thing it is another decade. http://www.erh.noaa....23/20030123.php I was thinking about that storm but it was a different set up. Western NC got a ton of snow, central NC was a dusting to an inch. Then this Miller B just blew up off the coast of NC.

GaWx
The snowiest winter on record in Downtown Charleston is 1898-1899 at 3.9" of snow...KLRO is the closest reporting station to the downtown area and is looking like 3" on the GFS. This could be a once in a hundred year snowfall season for them if this storm comes together tomorrow. Now, before anyone tries to say that KCHS has seen more than that in a season, I realize that. However, KCHS is in North Charleston and significantly far away from the Downtown area. If you've ever been there, you know there's a world of difference between N. CHAS and Downtown. Is that because there was no official city measurement from the great 2/10/1973 or 12/22-24/1989 snowstorms? I wouldn't be surprised if the city was able to get over 3.9" 2/10/1973 although that is far from being assured since depths fell off sharply toward the coast. However, the 12/1989 storm tended to have its heaviest amounts very close to the coast since it was very cold (well below 32) and it was a coastal storm. Therefore, I'd be shocked if the city didn't get over 3.9" in 12/1989. However, I still realize that it may not matter officially since no official measurement may have been taken. If so, then it makes sense that the 1899 3.9" is still the official record for the city even if it is probably deceiving.
