J.Mike
I was day-dreaming, while realizing that the next two events are passing the DC Metro area by, what snow amount would make me happy, and the reasoning behind it. Here goes . . . Amount: 8" Why that amount: It's the minimum amount needed to shut down Metro
Jebman
Amount: 18" Why that amount: It's the minimum amount needed for me to get the most out of shoveling snow
Alpha5
50" Tie the all time record for a snowstorm in CT....set in 1888
Ellinwood
Amount: 2" OR LESS Why that amount: It can make stuff pretty for a bit, people can still enjoy a snowfall and yet it's not too disrupting and can be easily cleared away and/or melted. Swiscaster
50" Tie the all time record for a snowstorm in CT....set in 1888 Middleton, right? My peeps hail from there. Anything over 4" would be good. Enough to cover the grass blades. And maybe force an OPM delay.

Fozz
3" It is enough to whiten everything and nicely stick to the trees. It is the threshold of what I would call a nice moderate snowfall. I can still see the grass with 1", and 2" is still pretty light.
BlizzardNole
Five inches This is what I consider to be a significant snowfall, and it's enough to completely cover the grass and just to have the feel of a good snowstorm. Given the overall cold pattern of this winter despite the Nina and the bad luck so far, I would be very surprised if we get through the whole winter without one 5-inch snow area-wide. thesnowsknows
Anything over 4 inches Reason: I'm more interested in dynamics than huge snows, although if I had to choose between 2 and 20 I'd choose 20. But for me it's more about each individual storm. Storms under four inches are just less interesting MOST of the time.

Huffwx
I'm not in DC metro-- Have 7.3 on the year-- normal is 18. One good 5 inch event and I'll be happy.

Shane
Really not how much, but what kind of composition. I want sub zero asphalt and a few layers of mixy with fine pow packed to about 6". basically, I want to be able to take an old Western Auto rail sled on the road for a couple of days while not many autos do. SNO
60 inches or 5 feet A Biblical crippling snow coupled with high winds and 10 foot drifts and followed by sub zero air temperatures for a month. Then bring on Spring.
BethesdaWX
between 6-10", but I'd be thrilled with 4" at this point.
SeanVA
5"+ is the perfect amount of snow. Less than 5 though if it is going to warm up quickly, I hate old dense snow.
clskinsfan
I like our little 3-6 events. Just enough to be able to sled with my kids. j
SLPressure
Amount: 4" Why that amount: As others have stated, it covers the grass blades. It's enough to cover everything to look like a winter wonderland as opposed to less accumulation which leaves everything looking incomplete, like stuck between winter and those other seasons. MD Snow
Amount - 3 inches Why? - Because I could make more money than I'd make with a 1-2 inch storm.
FrederickWX
5 inches. Enough to stick around for a little while, enough to create the winter wonderland look, but not so much that it's a pain to shovel.

Amount: 8" Why that amount: It's the minimum amount needed to shut down Metro I'm with you on this one. 8" is enough to stop Metro on above ground tracks, then OPM has to call it a day...will probably have to Telework though, but I can stay home! WinterWxLuvr
5". For some reason, I think this is the perfect amount. Very pretty, very serene, easy to shovel, lasts for a while.

real
I can say 3 or 5, but the truth of the matter is I probably really wouldn't be happy with anything less than 12.... But that is partly because I am can' remember the last time I saw a 3 to 5 inch snowfall. It seemed like everyone last year in DC was less than 3 or more than 5. And the winter before that, I only remember the one in March that gave us more than 5 and earlier lesser 1 to 3 inch type storms. The good ole fashion 3 to 5 inch storm does seem to be fairly rare around here. It is usually a couple of inches or a bigger event that tops 6. And those who said 8, I am not sure METRO would close if it was a long drawn out 8. It needs to come fairly quickly or be higher for them to close METRO. It's not like METRO sits there and does nothing while it's snowing, just waiting to reach 8 so they can close. If 8 fell over a course of a day or so and the snow never became heavy, they would have time to remove some of the snow before they would have to close. Don Cherry's Jacket
I'll go with 2. This winter I believe in setting my expectations low enough that they can be achieved. If I said 5 or 6, I figure I'll just be perpetually disappointed until next winter.
