Ice Fog and Hoar Frost in White Mountains...

This weekend I got up early on both Saturday and Monday to explore a world at -10F. It's always neat to see how the atmosphere and landscape responds to real frigid cold, and I was not disappointed.

From my sunrise vantage high on a hill above Conway, I saw some fog down over Eaton, NH. Hoping it was ice fog, I raced down there and found myself in a magical world of diamond dust. If you've never seen this stuff, you are missing out on one of the most amazing displays in nature...the whole world sparkles around you. There were sundogs and sunpillars, and a heavy layer of hoar frost on all the trees.

Sunrise from Conway...notice the icefog over the lake...

Monday, it was just as cold, so after a nice sunrise from a Jackson hilltop, I raced down to picturesque Chocorua Lake to capture these...
