showmethesnow
A steadfast belief in this storm being an overperformer. Ah, Got it. Think I do remember him thinking this was going to surprise people. Definitely over-preformed from what I was thinking. Generally in these type storms the warmer solutions verify. I'll take it. Dr No
I've never seen an ice storm this severe since living here... at least 1/4-1/3 inch accretion... and solid ice too, none of that drippy slushy stuff. 28.6 Thank goodness for that layer of sleet at the bottom or it'd be impossible to walk outside. birdsofprey02
I just drove from Bel Air to Ft. Meade/Columbia area and the commute was pretty smooth (straight down i95). In Bel Air, I think we got a bit more snow than most. The layer of ice was very very thin, but a good amount of snow underneath. I woke up at 12:30 and it finally turned to Fz rain. Then again at 3:30 and it wasn't doing much at all. Never heard/saw any sleet at all the entire night. (I couldn't sleep well, but it wasn't because of sleet). Shoveled outside my house with ease, it seemed more like slush than ice. Nothing on the trees or bushes though, everything just seemed wet (5:30am). In Ft. Meade, I noticed that the parking lots were actually tough to walk on, the layer of ice was much thicker. I heard a few cracks of ice under my feat as I walked in my building. Sounds like everyone else got a ton more ice.

Dalfy
I just checked 3-4 stations around me.. anyone else seeing temps dropping in nearby stations? Could it be the ice accumulation artificially lowering the temperature on the gague?
WinterWxLuvr
Just measured between 1.75 and 2 inches. Gonna guess that about 2" inches of snow fell. Hard to tell, as all is now covered in a pretty good layer of ice. Waiting for sunup to see what it looks like wrt ice. Edit: Cheers to all those who thought a couple of days ago that this event wouldn't be any fun.

W4CGT
Nice, cruncy ice on top of sleet on top of snow here in Leesburg. The residential streets are a mess. My neighbor who plows for Loudoun county is out now; He says Rt 7 and 28 are treated pretty well and are mostly just wet. Dalfy
Ice accumulation can cause problems for the temp sensors. I agree, but Im not sure in this case seeing that my temperature did slowly rise all the way up to 30 at around 530 am.. but now its decreased so I dont know why the ice would cause it to rise and then fall... You can actually see it on this radar map with overlayed temps.. look at the temp readings just west of i-95 in moco, carrol county, and fairfax/leesburg http://www.marylandwx.com/klwxstate.php

capitalweather
Probably the north winds dragging colder temps down into the area. I dropped two degrees in last hour from just over 32 to near 30 in NW DC. Gotta be the n winds.

Wow that must mean I really am at 26 degrees.. at this rate I dont think we will even break 32 seeing that it will be cloudy all day with continuing north winds.. That means whatever falls with the precip now in kentucky will be in the form of frzn rain if upper levels dont cool fast enough.

Dropped up here in Hanover almost a degree as well in the last hour or so. Wind was fairly calm until about an hour or two ago when the wind started picking up from the north. BlizzardNole
We have dropped from 27.4 when I got up a couple hours ago to 26.0 here. We dodged a bullet with these temps -- if we had gotten heavier rain it would have been ugly with power outages, etc. I was in southern MD for the horrific 1994 ice storm, where THREE inches of glaze ice just destroyed trees and power lines, leaving some in the dark for two weeks. I don't want to see another one!
MN Transplant
Was up to at least 31.3 on my home thermometer overnight, but now down to 28.2. Nearest Davis VP2 on Wunderground confirms the dropoff about an hour ago.

NeedaNoreaster
BTW - Glad I found this board. I joined Eastern years ago but its gone. So glad to see all of the people I've enjoyed reading over the years on this board. Anywho, last time in checked, it was 30 degrees in Laurel. Very icy on my street. Neighbors chopping and shoveling away the ice. The salt my hubby put down at 5am doesn't appear to have done anything...yet. Be safe everyone. WVclimo
2.3" of snow, with a glaze on top. 0.22" of liquid. 23 degrees. Largest snowfall of the season. 6.8" for the year now.
Lisse
Anyone know how the roads are in South Arlington and Alexandria in VA? I haven't ventured out yet - but temp is under freezing. Symblized
Must have gotten above freezing last within the last couple of hours here in Baltimore (Federal Hill). The thin sheen of ice is already being melted by rain. Edit: at 34 right now.
WinterWxLuvr
Note of the temps. Some of the stations in northern WV, like Elkins, have dropped 8-10 degrees over the past couple of hours. Note of the precip. Measuring gave a measurement of right at 2" of snow and ice. But shoveling it makes me think that we had a bit more qpf than was forecast over my way. Last night when the snow fell, it was fairly powdery, dry, snow. But I guess we got more freezing rain in the night, because it was pretty heavy to shovel considering it was only about 2".
