The Mustang at 120mph could go across open water :) No cops out on the ice. Just watch for pressure ridges (air time!).

Years ago I was out on Lake Onalaska buzzing along at around 60mph on a Yamaha Grizzley... A Ford Ranger BLEW past me at over 100mph. People are nuts out on the ice. They do races on Lake Neshonic just outside La Crosse.

How did you find that info on 12 inch snowfalls? Did you just skim all the records or is there a list somewhere? I'd be interested in how common they are here, but haven't went through the data yet.

Well, DTX had a list of the top 25 on their climo section of their website. But I also have my own personal lists, so I just expanded to 9"+ snowstorms. So unless LSE has a list on their website, you may have to do some research lol.

Looks like YNG has cracked top ten snowiest winters on record again -- and could be up to another 6" before the end of the weekend. The top three snowiest winters on record have all been in the past four winters -- and this one looks to eclipse those, unless it suddenly shuts off. Climate change is definitely supercharging winter snowfall -- at least in the lee of the great lakes.

What's really crazy is this was the first winter without measurable snowfall before December 1, and then it went nuts, with 40" coming in just two mult-day LES events during the month of December.

BTW, I should say in a La Ninas Detori averages three 6-10" storms.

Actually no. Detroit averages 1 storm of 6"+ in a La Nina winter. There have been two ninas with 3 such storms (1975-75, 2007-08) but 8 out of the past 18 Ninas actually featured 0 storms (though several of them were still snowy and or snowcovered winters).

Detroit official 6"+ storms in La Nina winters. 18 winters, 17 storms of 6"+.

1950-51: 1 storm (6.3")

1954-55: 0 storms (biggest 3.8")

1955-56: 0 storms (biggest 5.3")

1956-57: 1 storm (9.0")

1962-63: 0 storms (biggest 4.7")

1964-65: 1 storm (11.0")

1967-68: 2 storms (7.6", 7.7")

1970-71: 0 storms (biggest 3.7")

1971-72: 0 storms (biggest 3.2")

1973-74: 2 storms (11.2", 6.2")

1974-75: 1 storm (19.3")

1975-76: 3 storms (6.5", 6.0", 6.2")

1988-89: 0 storms (biggest 4.1")

1984-85: 0 storms (biggest 5.5")

1995-96: 0 storms (biggest 5.8")

1998-99: 2 storms (11.3", 8.3")

2000-01: 1 storm (6.1")

2007-08: 3 storms (9.0", 7.5", 7.3")

2010-11: 1 storm so far (6.3")

*****************************************

18 La Ninas 1950-2010:

10 of 18 had above normal snowfall

9 of 18 had above normal snowcover

of this...

7 had both above normal snowfall AND snowcover

3 had above normal snowfall BUT below normal snowcover

2 had below normal snowfall BUT above normal snowcover

6 had both below normal snowfall AND snowcover

I think detroit does well in a neutral pattern because temps are usually warmer and bigger storms occur around here with a less susppressive pattern

Again, a reminder to all. An "average" is just that. Taking it all and averaging it up. We have had many winters with more than 1, but many with none. Also, this is the official Detroit total. Im sure many of the 4.5-5.9" storms that "dont count" for the list were 6"+ in some or even much of SE MI.

From 1910-2010, Detroit averaged 1 storm per season of 6"+. But heres how it happened

43 winters had no 6"+ storms

30 winters had 1 6"+ storm

19 winters had 2 6"+ storms

6 winters had 3 6"+ storms

2 winters had 4 6"+ storms

1 winter had 5 6"+ storms
