Chicago Storm

Recommended Posts

After the winter you have had up there I would feel the same way, but sitting at 18 inches so far with no storm dumping more than 6 inches has me wanting a bigger storm. After this current storm, part of arkansas will have almost as much snow as parts of michigan. The dakotas, MSP, hartford , albany and NYC have atleast double the amount of snow. I know my geography limits the bigger snow potential, but I am still holding out for atleast one 8-12 inch storm. Excluding Dc/Balt, my location is the donut hole this year. It's been frustrating at times but I have enjoyed tracking weather. As time goes on I will enjoy the tracking aspect more and decrease the wishcasting.

Weve pretty much been in as good a pattern as MN for snowfall since mid-December (they just had a HUGE head start). See my above post re: February and a big storm.

No place in Arkansas will have more snow than MI. Unless its some place in the mountains of AR perhaps? Certainly none of the official sites. And even though some are into storms and not snowcover, i just dont understand the concept... per climo it makes them stand out like a sore thumb in AR with a 2nd snowfall of the winter. But from a sensible wx perspective... weve had several shovelable snowfalls and snow on the ground for a month and a half and counting...I cant see that as losing to someone who may get 2 freak snowstorms that melt in a few days. To each his own though :)

Do have to correct you on one thing though...Detroit has not been really a donut hole. Midwest-wise, Detroit has seen more snowfall than the entire states of NE, KS, MO, most of IL except extreme northern IL, central and NW OH, southern IN and on southward. Of course Im talking inches-wise, so we do average more than those spots, just saying. If you want to go by departure from normal, well, DTW is right near normal, while Milwaukee, much of northern MI, and some of NNE are below normal. As is the midatlantic, which you already mentioned.

I don't know about you guys--but I am liking the weather pattern we are heading into. No fantasy-storms to bother with--and quick hitting but small clippers/disturbances that keeps the pattern active and lively with no major torch in sight.

I love a pattern of clippers...some usually surprise and some disappoint. Balances in the end, but makes a b*tch for tracking.

Sure we have had snow on the ground but thats boring. I don't know how anyone finds enjoyment in starring at the stale snow thats been on the ground for 3 weeks. Sure we are around normal, but with the above average amount of storms we should be close to double. I believe besides NE (usually on the dividing line between really cold and warmer temps) , KS and MO have a different and warmer climate in the winter so it makes sense they dont have much. Same goes for southern illinois. Being this far north, we have one of the lowest running totals. Milwaukee and central michigan might be close but other than that it's been a disappointment. Considering we are in a la nina, we mine as well be below average. Theres no need to go on. Trying to stay positive and move on.

Just went out and did some snow depth measurements in the ol' backyard. Couldn't believe how rock hard the layer of snow was beneath today's snow. The combination of the wet snow that fell and the hours upon hours of rain/freezing rain turned that into a solid cement layer of ice. I literally had to use both hands and the weight of my body to force the ruler through that layer of frozen snow. Anyway, the snow depth averages about 4 inches. Not that impressive, but a respectable cover after going a week or two without any earlier in the month.

The snow never had a stale look until yesterday. It looked fresh. I enjoy it because I like winter, im really shocked at how many on here are all about storms and couldnt care less about having any snowcover. I thought thats what winter was about . The boring thing is kind of a double standard too to me. Sure we havent had a storm this winter that can compare to what much of the east coast has had, yet....all that time in between those storms, its more "boring" there with days oif sunshine and no snow falling, while here we almost always have snow in the air. I think what it all boils down to...is though Im into climate and my winter sports is limited to sledding, I definitely seem to fit the mold of a winter sports enthusiast more than a weather hobbyist. Just how it goes I guess :)

Yeah, I know KS and them have a warmer climate, I only threw them in bc you mentioned dc. I consider north of 80N to be where true winter is. Detroits running total is on the lower end running totals-wise of places north of 80N, but still find quite a few that are lower:

Milwaukee, WI

Des Moines, IA (same as dtw)

Cedar Rapids, IA

Rapid City, SD

Des Moines, IA

Toledo, OH

Lansing, MI

Pretty soon we are going to be so desperate, we are going to pray for a snow shower to hit our house. (Like summer thunder storms) ...So whens our next biggest potential for a snow shower LOL. ALso we should issue, snow shower warnings

You are right. We are in desperate need of a snow shower. If theres one thing you can say about our climate, is that we almost NEVER see snow showers in the air :axe:

Look at how those 0's rack up in the SNW column of the f6

Yea I am over severe weather. Ever since being in the middle of the F-1 that hit in august on hayes between M59 and 21 mile road (I work at costco), Ill pass from now on.

Ive always been fascinated by severe wx but afraid for it to destroy anything i cherish lol. Lost a favorite tree in 2003 to lightning. Other than the brief thrill of a storm, not into the destruction. Was saddened to see the tornado destruction in some areas this past summer.

For me, snow of ANY kind is >>>> severe wx

LOL a favorite tree. Yea I agree with that . I enjoy severe weathr in the distance, but unfortunately it's tearing apart someones tree or house. When i heard the sirens in August, (was tracking it on my phone) I went out and saw the wall cloud. I thought for sure it was going to destroy my house a mile away. The first pic my dad took at around 16 and gratiot and the second one I took. Sorry for being OT but the boring weather around here has me resorting to tallking about summer. have a good night y'all

You know the worst part about that day, it was a day I was at work at Metro :( btw nice first picture, certainly something you don't see often in MI.

Now now, you're not Maine. Michigan averages like 18 tornadoes a year right?

Yeah, and I either sleep through them or work through them :( lol But I meant a wall cloud that photogenic too though, normally everything is rain wrapped here

This year though, I feel there is a good chance I'll get to see something.

I think that was my new years resolution last year...

I've sort of lost interest in this winter. Seriously, I'm not a snow cover (nickel and dime) kind of snow geek so I'll take the mild 97/98 winter over this crap any day. And there is nothing in the extended of interest. I still I'm holding out for an interesting March in these parts though.

That wasn't winter, more like extended Fall/or early Spring. :guitar:

To each his own though, but I'm digging this winter for here in LAF. Approaching 30" for the season and been sufficiently cold. I'll take snow whatever way I can get it. :)

Just cold and cloudy here early this morning. Sitting at 12. The snow completely missed us, not even a flurry. Looks like we have a shot at -10 tonight. That would be the coldest of the season so far. IIRC our lowest temp of the season so far is -5.

6 or 7 flurries here, feels nice to out perform you for once. :arrowhead:
