kerbs
A lot of people may not realize 2 of the peaks exceed 13,000 feet. I was on Mauna Loa a long time ago (1976) in July and it was quite cold early in the morning. A beautiful place!

I haven't been to the big island, but I have been to Maui and Mt. Haleakala--that reaches 10,000 feet. Not as impressive as 13,700+ though! LizardMafia
I was stationed on Oahu (Schofield Barracks)from 1992-1994, I never remember any sort of watches. Though my first winter there we had lows in the low 50s and people were freaking out.

Not as impressive as 13,700+ though! The thing about Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Haleakala is that their bases are at sea level whereas most of the 10-14k mountains in the West start out with bases around 4000 feet to start. Steve Even more impressive is their height from the ocean floor, which is the true height. For Mauna Kea that's about 33500 ft, 4500 ft taller than Everest!
