SUBJECT: CHANGE IN THE HEADLINE SNOWFALL CRITERIA FOR ADVISORIES...

WATCHES AND WARNINGS FOR THE NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS AND

FOOTHILLS SERVED BY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GREENVILLE-

SPARTANBURG SC.

BEGINNING 15 NOVEMBER 2010...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GREENVILLE-

SPARTANBURG WEATHER FORECAST OFFICE / WFO GSP / WILL INCREASE THE

SNOWFALL HEADLINE CRITERIA FOR THOSE COUNTIES UNDER ITS WARNING

AND FORECAST UMBRELLA ACROSS THE WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS

AND FOOTHILLS.

THOSE COUNTIES IMPACTED INCLUDE: GRAHAM...SWAIN...HAYWOOD...MADISON...

YANCEY...MITCHELL...AVERY...MACON...JACKSON...TRANSYLVANIA...

BUNCOMBE...HENDERSON...AND THE MOUNTAIN AREAS OF POLK...RUTHERFORD...

MCDOWELL...BURKE AND CALDWELL COUNTIES.

THE 12 HOUR SNOWFALL ADVISORY CRITERIA...FOR THE AFOREMENTIONED

AREAS...WILL BE RAISED TO 2 INCHES. THE 12 HOUR WATCH AND WARNING

SNOW CRITERIA WILL BE RAISED TO 4 INCHES...AND THE 24 HOUR WATCH

AND WARNING SNOW CRITERIA WILL BE RAISED TO 5 INCHES.

ALL OTHER LOCATIONS WILL RETAIN THE ORIGINAL SNOWFALL HEADLINE

CRITERIA OF 1 INCH FOR ADVISORIES IN 12 HOURS...3 INCHES FOR

WATCH/WARNINGS IN 12 HOURS...AND 4 INCHES FOR WATCH/WARNINGS IN

24 HOURS.

NO OTHER CHANGES TO OTHER METEOROLOGICAL PARAMETERS WILL BE MADE

ANYWHERE IN THE GREENVILLE-SPARTANBURG AREA OF FORECAST AND

WARNING RESPONSIBILITY.

This is interesting and I think warranted. I live in Greenville, SC and wonder why the mountains of Northern Greenville, Pickens, and Oconee counties were not included - elevations there can exceed 3,000 feet. It's also interesting to see the differences in watch/warning criteria between GSP (western NC), MRX (far eastern TN), and Blacksburg (northwest NC).
