(The timing would be off, but if you're only going for daily totals, I don't think that maters so much.) The problem with a heater is that it has a tendency to evaporate the snow instead of just melting it. Plus, the column of warmer air rising over the gauge can deflect falling snowflakes away from the gauge. If you only turn on the heater occasionally, that might be OK or at least greatly lessen the impact; however, if the heater is on all the time the likelihood of an impact to your readings is fairly high. Agreed. We see this in our heated gauges all the time. What you said about the column of warm air over the gauge is interesting...never actually considered that the heating might cause that, but rather that it was solely an aerodynamic effect. Under light snow conditions, the heated gauges can be terrible, because just as you said, the melted snow evaporates before making it to the bucket. As far as I know, the new heaters only turn on when the sfc temp is under 40 anyway. But personally, I try to lave mine off when there is no precipitation expected.
