Thunderhead
Regarding the local TV mets, I think the one most likely to post on here would be Dave Trygar, who fills in on KDKA. He seems to have the enthusiasm. The others, well...they're alright, but the enthusiasm just isn't there, imo. If someone wants to email Trygar via KDKA's website...be my guest. Have to say, I am impressed and blessed with the TV mets in Albany. Almost all have enthusiasm. Even one "old schooler" left ... reminds me of DeNardo, ha. Also, getting back to the dry slot / Joe DeNardo rule, etc. DeNardo's rule was that his meteorologists could forecast 4"+ for the PIT Metro only if a closed 500 mb low was projected to pass overhead. In general, this rule holds true, but there are exceptions. Dec. 5, 2002 stands out to me as one (KPIT ended up with 0.29" liquid equivalent and 4.8" snow). Burghblizz
On the negative side, it's a fairly progressive, weaker open wave with no closed H5 low. No matter what we think we know about "ratio's" and such, we can conclude that that scenario has never, ever (well, at least in the last 20 years) produced an 8 to 10" type synoptic snowfall in Pittsburgh. So unless it's being modeled incorrectly, that's not happening. This is shaping up as a pretty quick, but decent thump with .5" per hour type rates through a nice chunk of the night on Thursday --> but I think 4" or 5" is the MAX. Regarding the local TV mets, I think the one most likely to post on here would be Dave Trygar, who fills in on KDKA. He seems to have the enthusiasm. Yep Yep...I'm no Joe Denardo, but that's what I've been getting at for the last 2 days. This is a nice mid-sized event, but it's not going to magically turn into a 10" snowstorm because the upper air features just are not there. north pgh
Just shoveled and measured 1.5 inches on top of the 1.75 from 3 hours ago. Total of 3.25. Using a board and cleaning it off every couple hours or so it the best way to measure. I did it last year and it was very accurate.

northpittweather
Yeah i just went outside, it's dead silent out no cars driving, last time i recall this happening is only the Feb 5th snowstorm last year, and that giant windstorm (hurricane) in 2008 4.5 inches of snow in Bakers town and still coming down, 5-8 inch snowfall, people will end up with 5 to 6 inches and some areas east with 7 or 8 I nailed this storm in the coffin, 100% accurate again, nice also looking at the site with all the peaks, it's funny that one of the Allegheny county/Butler county is the furthest east in the Great Plains in the USA My link

north pgh
NAM gives us between .50 and .75 of precip + temps of 15 to 20 F during most of the the storm + snow ratios of 20 to 1, or even higher that would = about 7 to 14 inches of snow or so , and that's by the 18z NAM Winter Storm Watch will being going up pretty soon, watches are going up west of us, and the HWO all over Eastern Ohio and Pennsylvania You nailed it alright. Burghblizz
Wow, the GFS sure came around on this one! The 18Z run was way out to sea I think that is the one that has been showing up on the Euro, but in the Tues/Wed timeframe. I think they said the Euro had a Feb '03 look to it, with an inland and coastal low, with strong HP to the north.
Karl_Racki
Yeah haha i think I could use a break until after the game.. although i know i won't. But I would definitely talk to a mod, its now a step further that its just become name calling in personal messages. Maybe we can put an end to some of the posts cluttering up this thread if certain people take a little "break". Yeah,. it actually looks like a quit weekend outside of it being cold.. Brrrrr By Monday, this monster if still in play will be showing up on soundings 84 hrs out,.

Burghblizz
As modeled, this looks like a MAJOR hit for us. A 980 low over the Delmarva, with fat closed 500 low. Nice I95 rainstorm it appears. I can't read this damn model very well, but the 540 thickness line appears to be running through central PA. Maybe a tiny, tiny bit too far west. Shades of April '87 maybe. blackngoldrules
Looks like maybe another hour or two of snow and this one will be gone as quickly as it got here. I measured 4.5 inches. Maybe I can get close to 5 before it ends.

blackngoldrules
Looks like we have another batch of snow coming through just in time for rush hour. Most schools have 2 hour delays this morning. The storm for next week has trended even better for us with the 06z GFS. Just a little more west and we really get slammed. Should be interesting to keep track of. Gotta long ways to go on this one yet.

weatherman5416
The 00Z Euro was amazing! 2 inches QPF, all wind-blown snow. The 6Z GFS seems to have a similar idea; I think this really has some potential.
blackngoldrules
Looks like the NWS did a pretty good job with this one. Most people got around 4-6. I measured just a hair under 5. We've got some blowing snow to deal with this morning as well. Nothing like trying to clear off your vehicle with snow blowing in your face! Seriously, looks good and classic setup for a big storm, Low in OV with a transfer from a coastal low off the Delmarva. We may just be in business. 2" of QPF though..hmm little skeptical on that one , more model weenieness
