baroclinic_instability
It isn't the amount of moisture that is all that exceptional, in fact, this is run of the mill for a typical large storm in the Sierras, it is how cold this trough is going to be. The thermals are more consistent with something you would see in the Tetons, not the Sierras! Great ski snow. I agree, where we going? I am down for Mammoth. baroclinic_instability
They are definitely going to get nailed. Regions above 10000 feet will be in the prime snow crystal development region with 20-1 probably too low later in the storm. This is a once in a couple year cold snow event. Definitely not the moisture laden snow they usually see.

aslkahuna
Eh, I remember that during the broadcast of the Opening Ceremonies of the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley that the 18 inch snowfall that day was referred to as Flurries by a couple of the newscasters familiar with High Sierra Weather. While an exaggeration perhaps, 24 hour snowfall amounts under 2 feet are pretty much considered light in the wake of what can occur there. baroclinic_instability
Yeah, it is pretty amazing. I took a brief look at the discussion and they mentioned multiple sites reporting some pretty extreme precip values in thunderstorms, so it wasn't a bad ob. I would have to imagine there may have been some pellets in there as well so it prolly didn't amount to a massive amount of snow per se, but I am sure it piled up nice. aslkahuna
Blue Canyon is well known for heavy snow in the Sierra being on the windward side of the Range in the snowbelt elevation. I believe that for any town in the US that reports it has the highest average annual snowfall while Buffalo NY is usually considered the snowiest large city in the US. meatwad
I love the Sierras, even I experienced a Sierra snowstorm back in the 1980s, but that was in July, so it wasn't anything like this. This is the kind of place JI should move to, then he would get ungodly amounts of snow. Congrats to the snow to the Sierra residents.
Southland Wx
Posted a bunch of Ski Resort totals in my blog: http://adiabat.wordpress.com/2010/11/21/sierra-snow-doesnt-disappoint-more-on-the-way/ It will be interesting to see how Tuesday does...they could easily add 1-3 more feet on top of these totals. I imagine this is really pushing it for November. Great start to the season.
Southland Wx
Looks like another 1-2' on the way, and if you believe the NAM, up to 3' possible on top of the 2-5' that have already fallen in the High Sierra. Similar Nina Novembers average about 125% of normal precip in the Sierra (and interestingly, there is a tendency for the back 10 days of the month to be active... Nov 1-21 avg precip is about 95-100% of normal, but Nov 1-30 is 110-130%). We're sitting around 110-125% of normal right now and should solidly end up 125+ by tomorrow there. Very important to cash in on these early season events there, as Nina climo tends to dry out drastically come Feb and March in that region. Could also see another round of snow (especially if you trust the Euro) this weekend. Not quite as productive as this event, but still 1-2' > 5,000' would be possible if you take it literally. baroclinic_instability
The Sierras are going to get rocked a new one. Even the GFS spits out 7+" of qpf in the high sierras through 84 hours only! The moist SW flow will remain in place for quite a bit longer too. The totals from this storm will be massive even with high snow levels. 18Z GFS spits out 14+ through the forecast. Localized amounts will be much higher. 12+ feet seems quite easy above 9000 feet in the northern high Sierras.

Have to remember that Sierra snow has a high liquid content with the water ratio in the snow being closer to 6-8:1 rather than the traditional 10:1. Southland Wx
Have to remember that Sierra snow has a high liquid content with the water ratio in the snow being closer to 6-8:1 rather than the traditional 10:1. Especially considering how warm this storm is going to be. This really is an awesome pattern though. Very out of character considering we have a mod-strong Nina going in the Pacific. One thing's for sure...with the initial base from November up there and the monster snows the next week or so, skiing is going to be phenomenal up there over the next several months, especially if we can stray back into more Nina climo in Jan/Feb, with colder than normal wx. daddylonglegs
This is just crazy. I guess its good for California agriculture, considering i *think* they depend on this snowpack come summer?
Srain
Great news for California. The extended drought in Central and Northern California has drained lake levels to unbelievable levels. This year is a good start to replenishing those lake levels.
