Ellinwood
if i made met like quality posts...i wouldnt be ji. This board needs ji to be ji Aw HELL no. There is no "need" for people like you on ANY forum. If most of your facepalm-inducing posts were any worse, I would concuss myself. The relieving factor in all of this is that this isn't the NYC/PHL forum, where I WOULD concuss myself with all of the ill-conceived posts that are made there. All I have to worry about here is you and Jebman. We also have a fair amount of mets in this forum (some of which are arguably the best on the forum), which helps our situation a lot. EDIT: Screw it, I'm putting you both on ignore now... which breaks my usual policy of never leaving discussion out (so long as I can keep up with it). Bob Chill
The cold angle and daylight damming are working against us for the MLK storm.
mitchnick
careful looking solely at 850 temps for those with Euro MOS the thicknesses are above 540 even though 850s are below 0C I suspect there would be a fair amount of sleet and not snow based on those numbers I've been out all day so I don't know if it was mentioned never mind if it was

Bob Chill
MODELS THEN SHOW THE ONE LOW NEAR THE MID ATLANTIC COAST MOVING AWAY LATE TUESDAY AFTERNOON/EVENING BUT ANOTHER SHORTWAVE EMBEDDED IN THE LARGER SCALE NORTHERN STREAM TROUGH AFFECTING THE AREA. ECMWF IS QUICK ON THE HEELS OF THE PREVIOUS QPF MAKER WITH THIS MOVING THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT WITH THE GFS SLOWER FOR LATE TUESDAY NIGHT/WEDNESDAY. THERES OBVIOUSLY SOME UNCERTAINTY WITH THIS SECOND SYSTEM...BUT IT COULD PRODUCE SOME ADDITIONAL WINTRY PRECIP IN THE TUESDAY NIGHT/WEDNESDAY TIME FRAME. AND THEN TO COMPLICATE MATTERS...EVEN THOUGH GFS KEEPS A TROUGHY PATTERN OVER THE AREA THROUGH LATE WEEK IT KEEPS THE AREA DRY SAVE FOR UPSLOPE SNOW. ECMWF ON THE OTHER HAND BRINGS A STORM FROM THE SOUTH TO AFFECT THE REGION FOR THE LATE WEEK WITH A MIX OF WINTRY PRECIPITATION. HAVE VERY LOW CONFIDENCE IN THIS FORECAST ATTM. EITHER WAY THOUGH LATE WEEK TO NEXT WEEK LOOK TO FEATURE A BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURE REGIME. I didn't realize this week had to much to watch after the MLK snow-sleet-zr-rain fest. mitchnick
the question is, which model wins, GFS or NAM for Monday as much as this winter has sucked for us, this is a completely diff set-up than anytime before, so although my first instinct would be that we're screwed, that may not be the case (or at least I'm not ready to call it one way or the other right now)

yoda
I dunno at 66 Ian... 2m temps seem to parallel I-95 near DCA. I would think just N and W of I-95 at 66 would still be frozen
BethesdaWX
Doesn't GFS have trouble with cold air damming like this? I've always seen it warm things up too fast east of the mountains.
yoda
This is the total amount of precip in 24 hrs through 66. The 2m line is just west of DC by 66... which makes me think the DCA turns to rain around hr 63-64 or so. West of that is still frozen per the 18z GFS

I don't recall ever getting a power outage from an ice storm, so I'm not worried about getting anything more than a quarter inch of ice. Maybe I don't remember 1994 well enough.
