Related question (somewhat)--I was camping on Dolly Sods, WV ~15 years ago in late January (yeah, I'm nuts--but Old Man Winter lives up there if you got the cajones) and the pre-dawn morning following a sub-zero night, all of the twigs, branches etc. were covered with the most amazing 1/2 inch thick ultra-delicate frost, which sublimated as soon as the sun came over the horizon--like instantaneously. A lifetime experience if you've ever seen this--but I've always wondered--is that "hoarfrost", or is there a name for it at all?

It sounds like frozen fog or hoar frost.

The South-East Crew really talking about the 21-23rd threat. :x Amazing the attitude difference between the South-East this area ... and then the North-East. This area having a somewhat negative take on this potential threat... mostly do to the lack of impact for the "majority" of this region on the passed storms this winter. South-East talking about a potential ICE storm threat based on the Euro threat (but urging folks that it's still over a week away and things could turn better or worse depending on ones view point of those words ;p) .. North-East of course has just been hammered the last few times.

Not much talk about the rain/ice/mix bag event FOR some coming up on the 19nth. :P

Rime. Common at the tops of ridges, but sometimes even forms here in town under the right conditions.

Cool--thanks JJ! Forgot we have a native to the Dolly Sods area on board. Was in the pines above the Red Creek campground if you know the area--amazing sight for a winter weather fan.

Gfs would give IAD NW a decent snowfall.(in terms of this year) If it plays out like the Gfs is showing, I'd expect it to be even colder, as CAD isn't picked up well this far out. I think the GFS does have the right idea on this one. Finally a leesburg special?

I think 1-2 inches plus some ice could result in wsw criteria

Actually, I dunno if we get snow at all. If I am using this map correctly, wouldn't we be getting sleet since there is a warm layer at 700-850mb at 78 hrs?
