My concern too, I've had moderate freezing rain here and it's headed your way, I'm still at 24.8 degrees so it's ice as soon as it hits. I guess we'll be seeing this all day long, this could get rough.

You can tell how the precipitation is changing in how it's forming. When you see temps like that below, temp wise, that is clearly a sleet sounding. But we have freezing rain instead. So the -10c layer must be drying out and we have super cooled droplets instead and the much talked about dry air punch is moving through.

Still though, with 950mb temps of -5 to -6c, subfreezing layer up through 850mb to 875mb, and surface temps int the 20s...it's still a bit surprising it's not sleet instead of freezing rain.

Edit, latest observation in athens has mixed (unknown precip) so it's not a complete changeover yet.

4 miles NE of Franklin, NC:

1am: Snow Starts; almost like a summer downpour...only it's snow.

2am: 1.75" Fluffy Snow the size of quarters

3.30am: 5.8" Snowflakes about the size of grains of rice

8.30am: 7.5" Very fine snow particles

I can't believe that it is still snowing.

Freezing rain in gainesville now btw. It seems it's going to freezing rain in between the heavier elements with this lighter precip forming below the infamous -10c layer. Indeed, there seemed to be little sleet and freezing rain here a little bit ago when it lightened up but it's back to mostly snow as it has gotten a little heavier. But it must be getting close now.

Going to be an awesome sight to see a glaze on the trees over all this snow.

Someone told me last night on here that we wouldn't be close to 6 inch snowfall amounts here in the CAE area. NAM trends were a super ice storm and less than 2" of snow last night. Local mets have increased to 5-10" counties just North of us and 4-8" for us. Totals keep being increased. Tons of snow here and still pouring down! Heavy bands still coming out of Southwest GA so the GGEM/JMA/GFS verified for us!

I've noticed the local mets continue to increase the totals. I live in the upper central midlands (Blythewood) and we may very well end up between 7"-8" before the changeover to sleet. I'm thoroughly impressed!
