January 9-10 Winter Storm Obs Thread II

Pulled 6 measurements all over the yard/sidewalk ranging from 7-8" so i'll call it 7.5 for here. That was after a 20 minute sleet downpour, now light sleet and frz rain...time for the glaze! Have heard some measurements of close to 10" in the county, not sure how accurate they are but i don't doubt it. Waiting on my buddy north of walhalla to shoot me a measurement pic.

Checked the road and a good inch of compacted snow/ice in the ruts with 3.5" of snow outside the tracks. No scraping here yet. Not even attempting work tomorrow either, will be worse in the morning imo. I got 23 days of vacation so i'll give em 2 this month.

Sis got a beautiful 4-5" in the Buckhead section of Atlanta last night. My niece and nephew are very excited...no school for who knows how long and they can play in the snow!

Yep, it's been a great storm for ATL and the north/east burbs. Definitely no school tomorrow seeing as I have 4" on my driveway and sleet is continuing to cover whatever I try to clear. By Wednesday Fulton County at least will be open if they can treat all the roads.

Oh man...Belmont, NC is under another heavy band of snow. Looks like the Def axis is setting up shop around here. I measured a 30 minutes ago and we were at 4.75", before this band came in. It looks like its raining snow. Looking at radar, it looks like some holes are filling in down south. Hoping this holds for persons north and east of here.

Barely flurrying up here. But the omegas are moving in and the our lifting mechanism is here. We should be starting things back up here shortly. Currently 4".

nice pics lookout! very similar here

looks like the snow part of the storm is over - down to light sleet/freezing drizzle. one heck of a storm. not sure i really busy an additional .25" of qpf on some of the models, but we shall see lol

sorry to those who were missed :(

Thanks. :D I'll upload some more in a little while.

It really has been an amazing year for us hasn't it? 4 major snowstorms within one year and i know you had a decent icing event last year that most didn't get...not to mention all those little systems. Like last year, we had a system that dumped some moderate snow that changed to really heavy sleet here while it was snow just to the north. Due to a warm ground and above freezing temps (and it was daytime) it didn't really accumulate much..i think an inch. I think you got a couple of inches IIRC, didn't you?

"Officially" it would be around 30 inches of snow in the last year. But if you count the snow that melted and didn't accumulate or hurt accumulations due to it being in the daytime, etc...it's probably closer to 3 feet.

These two winters have been absolutely unreal. We might not see another string of storms like this in our lifetime lol. I truly am in awe at how great it's been for you, me, and the rest of our fellow georgians and south carolinians.

Well the band that FINALLY lifted into the county is ALL SN. But it also looks to decay quickly.

I think the best lift is going to be to my immediate east.. maybe It will clock me for a quick additional inch. :)

fingers crossed, but so far so good.snowfall has defintely picked up and with the little bit of wind we have makes it looked like someone keeps shaking the snow globe..lol

got right around 3 inches here with light snow. For those in the western piedmont/foothills. These bands over SC should start to become more north to south oriented as we go through the afternoon. The 16z ruc drops another .25 through most of the area. This is in response to the new s/w dropping into the Tennesse Valley and being on left front quad.

I remember when I first lurked the forum in '08 how livid you were about being in the "Lookout screw zone". Now you're at nearly double what I've got the past two years, lol! Getting some fairly heavy sleet now, actually the heaviest since I woke up :weight_lift:

You amaze me. You pick up 3" with nearly nothing on radar. Over here, we have to get hours and hours of moderate green to get up to 3", if we're lucky.

Have you seen flurries yet? It was snowing lightly at East and stopped as I went up the road past the Family Fare and now it's not doing anything.

It might have flurried while I was in the shower. Certainly no evidence of anything out my window and certainly nothing falling right now. In fact, the sky is lighter than it was earlier.

I hear ya Mark!

Walhalla got close to 9" (and it is snowing again) and Seneca anywhere from 7-9", 8 miles apart. For this county that's historic, biggest snow since 1989 (6").

Thanks Brandon!

In the light returns, but it you say .25" .....Then I expect heavy returns as it goes N - S..

I'm just NW of Hickory and I measure 2 inches on my deck, but I've had that amount since probably 9 AM even though it's consistently been dropping flakes. I'm wondering if the snowfall I have is compacting. So, I've cleared off a fresh spot on the deck to test my theory...

No, I just mean in general. You always manage to pick up inches and inches with light returns and we rarely get much of anything, even with heavier returns.

The world is out to get us.

We're almost at our average for the year. My folks in Lumberton are ecstatic about the amount of snow they have. Why not just relax? You're never happy anyway; you might as well let ILM, Lumberton, CAE, etc have their fun.
