calculus1
Should continue to see "on and off" S- to S in western NC while zone of strongest lift extends from around CLT area into upstate and midlands of SC. Some additional accumulation to be sure in western NC but not as efficient as very early in the day. In the axis of good deep layer lift, better accum rates provided IP is not mixing in. Attached images from NAM and GFS around 21z highlight deep layer moisture and lift (vertical velocities). Yellow line is H85-H7 critical thickness of 1540m while red line is low level thickness of 1300m. Of course, keep in mind surface wetbulbs through much of the Carolinas is below freezing for ZR where thicknesses are more marginal, i.e. Charleston. Jetstreak Thanks for the update, sir. Could you provide some more explanation on what the locations of the red and yellow lines mean precip-wise? Do you need to be between them to get good snow? North of them? Thanks. Batman
Just got back in from a sleding trip with the kids on a hill down the road, You would think my 15 yr. old son and 12 yr. old daughter are 8 and 5 whan it snows. Guess they get it from me. We have a 2-3" frozen glacier covering everything. My road is about an inch of solid ice. the zrn/sl mix falling w/ a 20-25 mph wind was quite chilling. While part of me is very disappointed at the sharp cutoff and the fact that we just missed some of the 5-10" totals just North of me, I am aware of where I live even in respect to N. GA. On the bright side we have had 2 or more inches on the ground twice now since Christmas. My kids have now had their second sledding event as well. Unprecedented for us. Everyone enjoy! oconeexman
yea I'm trying to use GSP's radar but it keeps freezing, skipping frames, and not loading. this one is quick and working great! http://www.daculaweather.com/ridge_georgia_master.php

Lookout
Radar isn't impressive but there is persistent light freezing rain/drizzle here..even when there isn't any returns over head. Really good crust over the snow now. In honor of this historic storm and by popular demand...the hulk is back

Btw, Chester county in SC is scoring big time with heavy snow down their way. The snowfall rate there is very impressive.

Jetstreak
Thanks for the update, sir. Could you provide some more explanation on what the locations of the red and yellow lines mean precip-wise? Do you need to be between them to get good snow? North of them? Thanks. Those are thickness thresholds for precip type. If north of both lines you're a sure bet for all snow. South of both contours, typically a rain event unless surface wet bulbs are below freezing for ZR issues. In between, often find mixed precip UNLESS localized thermodynamics are occuring w/in the atmosphere to cool the column for snow... such as a burst of heavier precip resulting in adiabatic cooling which often happens w/in mesoscale bands. You can also get diabatic cooling from snow too to adjust the temperature of the column of air. Jetstreak
seawolf14
I'm at work in Garner (Wake Co. NC) and we have nothing yet. Got a call from my Wife in Holly Springs and she says it is starting to snow there as of 15 mins ago. Talked to my Dad in Pinehurst and he says they had approx. 2 inches but the snow has "petered out" (his words), lol.

Its hard to believe South, North, East, and West, have received more snow this winter. Well anytime it snows in CLT I wont complain, I'll take the 3" I have and be happy. Still lacking that big storm but this one was fun to watch. Hopefully at some point this winter CLT will be able to cash in and get our big thump. Super excited for our GA and SC posters who are the big big winners this go around
NCWeSU
You guys in Durham/CH aren't missing anything with this band of flurries. It's just some light dandruff from old man winter running his hand through his hair. I guess the good news is that it's not melting on contact w/ the surface and it is making it through the dry boundary layer.

I hear ya Strong.... I've been experiencing the same problems you have been all morning... mosture is just being eaten up 20-30 miles to my south. VERY frustrating but hopefully as s/w continues to move ne, up 85 it will pull the moisture just hair more up to us.
