Huntsville, AL picked up 4" in the last hour and 7" in the last 3 hours and has been reporting heavy snow with thunder and lightning. They could end up with 12-20 inches. AVIATION HEAVY SNOW BANDS CONTINUE TO PROPAGATE NORTHWARD ACROSS NORTHERN ALABAMA...PRODUCING VLIFR CONDITIONS AT KHSV/KMSL CURRENTLY. SNOW MAY BE HEAVIEST AND MORE CONTINUOUS AT KMSL THROUGH ABOUT 08Z AS A BAND NOTED ON KGWX MOVES ACROSS THAT AREA. THE HEAVIER BAND MAY MOVE ACROSS KHSV LATER...BUT EXACT TIMING REMAINS A LITTLE UNCERTAIN. NEVERTHELESS...WILL PLACE TEMPO FOR 1/4SM AND VLIFR CIGS THROUGH 09Z. CONDITIONS EXPECTED TO IMPROVE TO LIFR/IFR AFTER 11Z...BUT LGT FZRA AND -SN MIX WILL CONTINUE THROUGH MUCH OF THE DAY. DISCUSSION /ISSUED 1102 PM CST SUN JAN 9 2011/ DISCUSSION... SIGNIFICANT ELEVATED INSTABILITY ALONG THE NOSE OF A 50KT LOW-LVL JET IS PRODUCING NORTHWARD PROPAGATING HVY CONVECTIVE SNOW BANDS. WE ARE RECEIVING SPOTTER REPORTS OF 1-2 INCH PER HOUR SNOWFALL RATES...AND GIVEN EXPECTED LENGTH OF EVENT HAVE INCREASED TOTAL FORECAST SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS TO 8-12 INCHES ACROSS THE AREA. THE DEFORMATION BANDING IS LIKELY TO PIVOT ACROSS NORTHERN ALABAMA TONIGHT...AND STRONG WARM ADVECTION UNDERNEATH THE UPR LOW WILL LEAD TO CONTINUED CONVECTIVE BANDING THROUGH AT LEAST 3 AM CST. SOME LTG/THUNDER WILL CONTINUE INTERMITTENTLY AND HAVE EXPANDED THIS WESTWARD ACROSS THE AREA AS KGWX RADAR INDICATES RECENT HEAVY BANDING TO OUR WEST. THE WSW HAS ALREADY BEEN UPDATED AND DISSEMINATED. EMERGENCY MANAGERS ALREADY REPORTING ROADS IMPASSABLE IN MANY AREAS AND TRAVEL IS DISCOURAGED ACROSS THE AREA. Huntsville, AL picked up 4" in the last hour and 7" in the last 3 hours and has been reporting heavy snow with thunder and lightning. They could end up with 12-20 inches. I was watching TWC earlier and I can't remember exactly where it was but they said that some area only has one plow for the entire county. If that's how it is in other areas of the South, it's gonna be bad. thats how it is for my friends in Seneca, SC in the northwest part of the state. They only have a few plows and cancel school for a 1/4" of snow....that would be the life, where up here in takes 12".....during the overnight into the morning hours.....and coming down at an 1"/hr...ugh. They average less than an inch per year, so they can't really justify spending money on snow removal equipment. The state does have a decent amount of plows, but obviously they focus on interstates and major state highways. County roads are going to be a disaster.
