strongwxnc
Waiting to hear about that down here. Did McDowell get in on the school schedule wavier? We have a protected Teacher work day next Tuesday (to change schedules to the new semester that starts on Wednesday). I also do not think they will pull MLK day. Looks like we will add a day in June or take away some spring. Well our SRO just walked in to let me know that Saturday school might happen this year and MLK will stay a holiday. Also, June 10th has been added (per Broad Approval) I hate the this damn calender law. We should be able to start before 8/25. We have four days during spring break we can add. But folks get mighty pissed when the leaders talk about that. Does not brother me, I work that week anyway. After missing out 4th consecutive day in a row, the local school system here in McDowell County has made the decision to have school not only this Saturday, but also Monday, MLK Day...I don't ever remember our school system going on Saturday's, they never did when I was young. I'm sure that will spark some debate in the community. I'm with ya. I've already exceeded my snow total from last winter and its only January 13th. If winter disappeared it would not bother me one bit. I could live with that. Plus (for me) it gets me closer to baseball season!!

Just thinking about that for a second really makes me think. I remember some news about one county doing a different schedule here in NC. They were going to extend class an hour each day, so school would end at 4pm. This would cut the school year by 18 days, and save millions of dollars in state revenue. Now imagine if 99 other counties did this. But out state wont let them, its kind of stupid too not let yourself save money..I would love to shorten the school year, make breaks longer, save millions of dollars, all for just extending each class 25 minutes. McDowell County is not eligable for the school waiver...Don't know if this is the truth but I've heard that counties will be allowed to request the waiver by submitting to Raleigh the average number of snow days over the past 5 years...if it meets the criteria than that system can be added. Snow Girl
Dont get me wrong I love snow and any kind of winter weather but I do feel as though a nice warm up would be good for a few days then turn back cold. This is the kind of cold where you just hate to even go outside in.And Im a winter lover. But I would love to have one more big storm to track this winter and get about a foot here in Sanford. Oh and about the makeup days for school I dont know when Lee County is gonna do them but last year my little girl had to go to school a couple of Saturdays to make the snow days up and it sucked.. I remember when I was growing up in the 80's they didnt stress making up snow days like they do now.

strongwxnc
Here ya go Dan... http://www.ncleg.net/Sessions/2009/Bills/House/PDF/H593v6.pdf "Local school districts can still petition the State Board of Education for a waiver for the law-mandated begin/end dates if a history of inclement weather can be demonstrated. Basically if a school system has closed for eight or more days in four of the previous 10 years, that's grounds for asking for a waiver. Now, however, if weather causes a school to be closed for as few as two hours (examples would be late start or early dismissal or combination of the two), that constitutes an entire "missed day" for the purposes of the waiver requirements." We have easily met that criteria the past two school years. I would have to look back earlier in the past decade. If this part of the country is truly getting back in the pattern of active winters, then you may see a lot more counties ask for a waiver in future years. strongwxnc
The whole issue is BS. When I was in HS (same time you were) we got out the last week of May. Started the second week of August. Would give more wiggle room. We have easily met that criteria the past two school years. I would have to look back earlier in the past decade. rduwx
I could use a little warm period as long as it turns back cold and there's another chance at a storm. My new dog will be here Sunday so some warmer weather would be nice while I work on getting the pup house broken. I would hate having to go out several times a night w/ it 25 degrees. Brick Tamland
I like the snow, but I hate the cold with no snow to show for it. That is just a waste of potential and no fun. The snow is what makes the cold weather fun. If it isn't going to snow, I wish it would warm up and we would have above normal temps. I don't think we're going to have another chance of snow soon. In fact, I would not be surprised if our snowstorms were done for the Triangle this winter.

The end of January through February have almost always been the months where the chances are highest for a big snowstorm or two. No reason to throw the towel in. WeatherNC
18z DGEX from 12/18/2010 what verified in NC 7 & 8 days later My 8.8" report to RAH was not reflected, but two 10" reports over the county are, WTF, I measured on the SN board? triadwx
Looks like the DGEX actually handled that one well in the early stages. Pretty uncharacteristic of the DGEX to actually handle a system well.
JQPublic
I still look back fondly on 96. Although it was technically 2 school years, we were out for around 5 days for the blizzard of 1-96 and around 2 weeks for Hurricane Fran 9-96.
