irony (n.) - having to drive to the mountains to jump off a cliff due to a screwjob, but not being able to get there due to snow on the highways.

BTW, something's finally getting here on radar. Whether it'll hit the ground, or take one look, realize it's in the Triangle, and then float right back up into the cloud? That's still open for judgement. :lmao:

RAH point forecast for Durham is still saying 1/2" today, 1-2" + .1" ice tonight, .1" ice tomorrow. Certainly not earth-shattering, but it's still snow. I'm just stunned I finally lived to see a storm where Columbia (where I lived for 7 1/2 years) got more snow than Durham did! I imagine most of SC is pretty much paralyzed right now.

if we did get that it could make trouble for the roads tomorrow. I just don't see it happening.

Foothills was so optimistic about this thing. Even Allan Huffman and Matthew East called for a couple of inches and some ice. I really thought we had a shot, but looks like we won't get even a trace of anything.

If you would actually try to do something besides read what everyone is saying about your back yard you would realize it's not that easy. You do the easy thing and then b**ch about not getting what you thought you were getting. Until you try to make a forecast of your own don't throw the mets under the bus!

Well, I was expecting the roads to be a mess, but...RAH is reporting 33 (dew point 10) at Chapel Hill, 33 (dew point 8) at RDU. As aggressively as they've been brining, and if the temperatures don't drop too far, they might be able to keep the roads passable with just light snow or freezing rain. I've pretty much written off the kiddo going to preschool tomorrow, as they stick with the Durham County schedule and I'll be shocked if they open.

They've hung with that 1-2" + a little ice forecast through the day as things have gotten worse, and it wasn't supposed to really fire up here until 4:00 or so anyhow. So far, at least the timing is on track for us.

north of 40 the snow chances (very light) over the next 2 or 4 hours, then that line goes to VA border. Whats left is a cold pocket from 925 down and it hangs around, so all the moisture lingering in the piedmont well down into GA and SC will expand over most of the interior Carolinas for a prolonged ZR (light) event, with temps in the 20's, mostly west of 95. This basically played out as we thought, the snow did movea little further north at the last minute, but with high pressure over the surface of ne NC for so long , it was bad timing, and with the dying upper support, thats how it played out and the models did ok overall. All along it appeared north central to north east NC had the least chance of measurable snow, just how this system worked.

How was that throwing them under the bus? I just said I was opimistic and it doesn't look like it will happen. It's not like I said they don't know what they are talking about.

You did an outstanding job!!! Quit worrying about satisfying the ones that have no common sense. I actually believe some think you can make it snow on top of them. I appreciate what you do and how much you have helped me. We have not got what I wanted at all. It is snowing the best it has all day and we have a good dusting. The roads are white so we are still applying salt to keep from freezing. I think some forget this is a free site and you guys do have other things to do than to sit on here all day to calm their nerves.

The NAM was showing the precip drying up before getting too far north and most mets thought that was unlikely but that is exactly what happened. Look for a nice warm up starting next week and continuing for a pretty good spell. I would not be surprised to see Feb. be pretty much above normal for the SE.

Brick, you're going to get a short period of snow, then sleet, and then prolonged freezing drizzle. Wetbulbs around there are 25 to 28, and won't be going anywhere, so get ready to do some ice skating tonight and early tomorrow morning.

It sounded like to me you were calling there forecasts a bust and it struck a nerve. Also you said Foothills was optimistic. You also made it a point to say Allen and Matthew were calling for 2 inches. Maybe I took it wrong but that's the way it sounded to me.

I was just saying that is why I was optimistic. I didn't say anything like I will never listen to them again, they are awful. That would be throwing them under the bus.

Foothills, you've done an admirable job with tracking this system. Even better than the NWS and TV mets imho. I hope you're getting a good dose of snow there. You deserve it.

The zr prediced for the Triangle now.....is it going to be something to be concnerned about?

I got 5". My biggest event since March 2009. The ice everywhere tonight in the interior Carolinas will be pretty bad, not dangerous in the sense of an ice storm bringing down trees, but maybe a tenth of accrual , and thats bad news for roads with surface temps 26 to 29 for a long period.

The best thing you can do is read more and type less. I personally know Robert is burned out and is getting tired of following these storms day in and day out. You have heard him say he is tired and is having to look after his parents as well. So how about given the mets and others a break. Or better yet go to school like them to become a met so you can answer your own questions. This forum does not pay them a dime so I appreciate anything they give us. If you look at what he said he pretty much nailed the storm. yes I wish I had more than a dusting but it is still snowing. I won't get what I want but not going to keep on and on about why it didn't. Watch the radar and how it dries up. Nobody can control the dry air but I can't keep complaining about either.

It's funny when my yankee friends complain about schools getting out early today when nothing has happened here so far. They just don't get that when it comes to snow here, no one knows what will really happen. So, when there is even the potential, it's better to be safe than sorry. Too many times kids have been stuck at school or on buses because of snow.

there's already .15" here (and looks like a fair amount more at lookouts judging by those pics lol)...and whats falling is a little heavier than i could call drizzle. the contours on the ruc were close, but another .10 wouldnt be out of the question, which would be almost .25 glaze on top of everything...and i would imagine for quite a few in ne ga, east central ga into the upstate

True, but that's to be expected. Every storm has a screwhole and its victims need their own thread to vent. Visitors read at their own peril.

Congratulations on your snow by the way. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

its a major bummer to be in the screw zone or fail zone. we have all been there :( sorry you guys missed out - this one seemed like it really and truly might hit just about every poster in the se with a major storm.

Raleigh, N.C. — Areas of central North Carolina that haven't seen snowfall yet Monday may not see snow at all, said WRAL Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel.

"If snow doesn't fall by 8 p.m., it's over. That's all she wrote," Fishel said.

Fishel said the window for snow ends at 8 p.m., when air in the mid-level atmosphere will dry out and warm up, but precipitation will still fall in the Triangle in the form of sleet and freezing rain.
