Chicago WX
I thought it might be a good idea to create a thread to talk about snowstorms/winter storms of the past. Maybe at some point, we can create some sort of catalog of those historic storms. All areas and storms welcome! I'll start the bidding with this monster. January 1999. Chicago WX
January '78...very nice. The grand daddy of them all, if you will, for the eastern Midwest. January '67 was a pretty big ice storm here in the LAF area. Obviously, it was a huge snow producer for Chicagoland and SE MI.

Chicago Storm
December 25-26th 2009. System total here was 12.3", but the vort that rotated in on the 25-26th produced 11.3" of that. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=lot&storyid=45219&source=

Stebo
This one I thought was a pretty good one up here, kind of sucked if you were south of I-80 though. Also for some reason I cant find a good Low track for this storm. But alas, I present the Super Tuesday storm. Again the forgotten part of the storm for obvious reason. As a sidenote, guess who drove home from Mount Pleasant on the 6th. Yep this guy did...

baroclinic_instability
i'm kinda pissed i was in michigan for that storm. GFK got destroyed on that one. Did you see this? Chicago WX
Not too bad out up this way too. Really that whole winter was full of gems. Crap, I was looking for a GRR snowfall map for that storm. After you posted that map I went looking and found this gem (where I assume you got it from): http://www.crh.noaa.gov/grr/snowmap/ And I completely forgot about DTX's excellent archive. Thanks for posting both of those maps.

baroclinic_instability
Here is a fun map. Not a huge storm per se, but one of the most amazing arctic fronts I have ever seen. GFK got blasted twice that year by these, both bringing brief blizzard conditions. I believe Great Falls and other locales in MT dropped 30-40 degrees in one hour with this front. And yeah it was chaos for 6" of snow. That system, as you know, kicked off one of the best 8 day stretches in LAF's snow history.
