this is an aspect that really wasn't focused on at all locally, and kind of snuck up on us. but now, with a fresh snowcover and very cold air ready to move in, i get the sense the local weather guys are playing catch up. One of our locals doesn't think we'll get above 10 tomorrow and said below zero readings tomorrow night. Everyone was focusing on the 4 incher and I think there is going to be a lot of WTF???!!! expressions tomorrow when people step outside lol.

Officially below zero now here in Erie. -1. Winds are starting to die off a bit, but the temp isn't really falling any faster. I think the best CAA is over, but the calm, or near calm winds later tonight may allow our temps to really tank here at ground level. RUC has us going down to near -20, but I highly doubt we'll drop another 20 degrees. The NWS has us hitting -10, but I think -12 to -15 is doable.

-2 now. The only thing hurting us is we only have about 4 inches of snow on the ground. I think if we had 10"+ we'd really bottom out later. Other than that the setup looks nearly perfect for this area. RUC and other models show the coldest temps knifing into northwest Illinois early tomorrow. We sit in the lowlands of the Rock River valley here, so these types of setups really favor this particular area on nights like these.:guitar:

Extreme cold warning? Is this a new thing?

Yes, if the actual temp is expected to reach 35 below with winds less than 5 mph the warning will be issued. Saw a post about this new warning somewhere here in one of the forums a while back.

Umm---it just dropped 11 degrees to -42 lol.

Yeah, my bad. It was -31F at 10PM. Crazy. It looks like it hit -44F at 2 AM...a new daily record. Also, it's the coldest temp ever recorded during the Jan. 18-31 period. All-time record is -55F on 1/6/1909.

We'll have to see what the min was in between hours.

It's -1F imby, about 20 miles west of Chicago. First sub-zero temp of the season.

Yeah the "lol" wasn't at you--but that the temp bombed that fast in an hour. I was hoping it would get to -50--but -44 is still amazing.
