I think NYC will have snow cover close to every day this month. We are still holding onto a few crusty inches of snowpack here in Westchester despite only receiving 13" in the blizzard.

Indeed, Central Park reported a 5" depth yesterday morning.

Another fun question: how much does the park see in total snowfall this month?

I think 10"+ is a safe bet, so I'll go with 15". I think there should be another major chance after our very cold period around the 25th-30th.

Already at 17 counting today, 18 counting tomorrow (likely).

We could see snowcover for the entire month if we hang on after tomorrow's storm. :weight_lift:

Central Park could easily get 20" snowfall this month with the Miller B/overrunning potential on Friday.

Still almost a foot of snow cover here in Westchester as 14.5" fell Wednesday, and I'm not expecting to lose too much in this storm at 350' elevation as we can probably stay frozen for a while.

There have been 2 longer streaks since 1993-94:

2003-04 - 25 days - 1/15 to 2/8

2002-03 - 26 days - 2/7 to 3/3

Note: I used data from LGA from 1996-2003; snowcover from Central Park is missing for those years in the data I have - via climate.usu.edu)

were at 24 straight days now...pretty amazing. id say the last time we had snow on the ground this many consecutive days would have to be in 1993-94

Trace days are days when a trace of snow was recorded or a trace was on the ground...Total days 1"-20" also...

Lack of trace days in recent years makes me think a few are going undetected... Years ago snow depth was to the tenth of an inch...Later in one inch increments....

1993-94 has the most 1" days...Most trace days and consecutive trace days...

1947-48 had the most consecutive 1" , 4" and 10" days...

Unc - Check 1993-1994 again. Central Park only had 34 consecutive days with at least 1" snow cover according to the data I have (from http://climate.usurf...oducts/data.php) - from Jan 4 to Feb 6, 1994.

from 12/29 to 1/2 there was at least an inch on the ground...12/29 had 3.7" but it started after obs time...1/3 had a trace at obs time but 0.4" fell that day bringing an estimated half inch rounded to one inch...After that there was at least one inch until 2/7...

I see what you're saying, but the only consistent measurements are the snow depth at observation time (12z).

that would leave out days with an inch of snow that melted before obs time or accumulated after...I included them because how can you not?

I'd say for the same reason that you don't get to measure snowfall and clear the measuring surface as many times as you want. There is a measurement standard, and like it or not, right or wrong, we don't get to decide it, but it makes sense to try to keep measurement methods consistent over time. Otherwise you can't really compare data from one time period to another.

understood...That's why I explained my method for all those years...it inflated the numbers for each year...

I agree with your reasoning. If there was snow on the ground, it has to count. It DID snow that day, after all!

I think the snow obs were at midnight at one time...I'm not sure though...famartin might know if I'm right?...I think midnight should be the obs time for snow depth...

I'm not liking this but I think it's safe to say that this snowcover is here to stay until February. I don't think I ever experienced this before, I just want winter to end already lol.

we would need to get to February 21st with at least 1" on the ground to tie 1947-48's 58 straight...It had at least 1" on the ground from 12/23 to 2/18...

Can we break the 47-48 record? If we get the coastal next weekend, it's quite possible...

1947-48 had snow cover from 12/23 to 2/18...58 consecutive days...Highest snow depth 25" 12/27...13" 1/25...7"+ from 12/26 to 2/14...

2010-11 has snow cover from 12/26...We need to see the snow pack of at least 1" last until 2/21 to tie the record...Three more weeks...
