tacoman25
I would also put Dec 1989 in there Yeah, Dec 1989 definitely would rank above a couple of those. I was just ranking the list he provided.
aslkahuna
For the CONUS overall, I'd rank those: 1. 1983 2. 1985 3. 1977 4. 1994 5. 1980 I would most definitely add January 1962 plus December-January 1962-63. For the Western States, nothing has yet beat January 1949. Steve

Steve Yeah, Jan 1949 is king for the West, with Jan 1937 a very close second. Jan 1930, while not nearly as impressive in your region, was also just as cold as 1949 over many other portions of the West.

Yeah, Jan 1982 and Dec 1989 would also have to be included-- and Dec 1989 to Jan 1990 might have to get the vote for the most violent turnaround lol. A-L-E-X
I would also have put Feb 1934 in there, as well as Feb 1899, but I was trying to limit things to relatively recent (that is, approx past 30 years.)

I believe this month was even colder nationally than Jan 1985. I think Jan 2011 could rival Jan 1985.
wxmx
Impressive 582+mb around Bering strait in the 12z Euro and 1071mb close to NW AK.... I think the record for the US was set during Feb '89 with a 1072mb in Alaska.

Nikolai
Massive arctic dump 1/16-20+, but along with that... a reemergence of the huge -NAO? Looks like the ridging over Quebec/Greenland is about to connect, and with the heart of the cold plunging south... Repeat of December's pattern with another major late month event? MN Transplant
I believe this month was even colder nationally than Jan 1985. I think Jan 2011 could rival Jan 1985. Correct, '82 was 0.2° colder than 1985. Not as cold as the late 70s years though, obviously.

We are obviously overdue for a mega cold January...will be interesting to see where 2011 ends up. Amazing how Jan 1977 and 1979 blow everything else out of the water. pcbjr
Can someone explain why this model, and so many others, really don't show the real cold getting deep into the south east, or into Florida?

The previous two winters were colder here, but nationwide, I think 1978-79 was the coldest of that very cold trio.
