Rolling E PA/NJ/DE/NE MD/Elko, NV/Big Jim: Not During Storm OBS Discussion/Banter Thread

I was not expe4cting it to be so windy today.

28 mph gust already today, currently 63.9°/42.

My highest gust ever since January 2010 is 36 mph from the March nor'easter last year

My wind obs are dependent on the direction of the wind though. SW, which is where today's wind is coming from, is the only sector that is open leading up to my anemometer.

Anybody else smell smoke in the air today? Smelled it while I was in North Jersey, and then again while I was in freehold later this afternoon.

The Forest Fire Service was doing a lot of controlled burning today around the state, probably what you smelled. This is the time they do a lot of that, to get ready for the spring fire season.

Isn't that really the "spring arson season"? :arrowhead:

You stole that from Aqua Teen Hunger Force, didn't you? ;)

I didn't actually- I forgot about the controlled burns, but it smelled more like diesel than smoke. The chicken smell I think was from either the restaurants nearby and a south wind mostly likely pushed the smells towards my house.

Anyway, today it's been lightly raining with a mild temp of 55. The wind has been sporadic as it blows around 20mph when it's not raining, but then subsides in a heavier shower.

Just a "heads up"

Tonight might....will be the last time you will see Space Shuttle Discovery fly above your heads.

It will be trailing the ISS and rise maybe 20-30 seconds after (reverse that)

ISS rises at ~7:23 in the WNW and will reach about 50 degrees altitude by 7:25 in the North

enjoy!

Lastnight was much better for me at least and while both the ISS and the suttle were connected together, you could see both moving in the same direction at the same speed, and it looked like they were about a football field apart.

I'll have to see my video to see if i got it on my Digital camera.

Thanks for the heads up. I've seen both fly over before, but never one right after the other. That was pretty cool!

learning about the Hadley Cell in bio...go figure

what I can't seem to understand is why at 30-60 lat, the lower level winds of the hadley cell are poleward...my guess is something to due to with equilibrium and BDC stuff, but I'm not sure and it's not relevant for the class anyways

in other news...flyers with a magnificent loss to the thrashers

I hate DST in March...don't mind the extra week of DST into November but having the sun come up at 6, 6:30 in March is a nice "sign of spring."

2 weeks man 2 weeks then it will be back to coming up earlier again, it was nice, but the end of the day is the better offset which now more people after they get done work can get more things done outside in their yards with more sunlight up untill 7:05 for today and each day gaining on either side of the sunrise sunset. So i think we can sacrifice the change to have an offset for now. But it would be great to have this change of the clocks go bye bye.
