I have barely posted since winter 2007-08.

A little burst of snow, like this couple of inches, seems exciting.

Yawn :snowman:

Hopefully this La Nina will produce a couple decent events later this winter.

Welcome back to the board. I haven't posted as much as in the past, but hopefully that changes soon with more wintry weather this season.

As for the current event, CITY TV met Adam Stiles on his Twitter account says that there was thundersnow in Scarborough (eastern part of Toronto).

Wow. I believe it. There were some 35 dbz returns showing up in that, for lack of a better term, squall line.

winds are picking up behind the clipper...schools letting out...having ground blizzard conditions around here, surprised MPX don't have an advisory for this.

I have dealt with ground blizzards a lot in GFK for college. We got them all the time--GFK often issued blizzards outside of town with nothing in town for those very situations. The Red River Valley is ideal since it is both flat and treeless. Wind blows forever.

Haha I just post too much. I should lighten up.

Honestly the EC guys are the worst. Earthlight and ORH_wxman are on nearly 24/7 it seems during some storms.

Nah you don't. At least you're posting useful info. I just ask because when this side dies down for the night, your over in the NYC thread all night lol.. don't take it personally, just was asking as a joke. Lol

Yeah those guys are a fun group to post with. They know their EC weather, and I personally enjoy all weather across the US. They have a big group that stays up analyzing crap.

Upgraded to a winter weather advisory for you. Surface map reveals winds gusting to 40+. Impressive.

yeah just read it...can't see squat and my vantage pro2 says winds gusting over 40...gotta love living in the country

Nice! Do you have a full weather station? You also do plotting with GEMPAK--do you have a background in meterorology besides enthusiasm? I don't know very many weather enthusiasts alone who even know what GEMPAK is.

There are 4 stations reporting 1/4 SM visibility or less. Very impressive.

I just have the basic davis pro2 station...no background in meterology just a weather nut. I'm trying to learn GEMPAK but it's time consuming & getting my website going with it. Wonder why MPX just went with weather advisory but like you said earlier this is mainly in open areas.

NWS doesn't really have a good way of dealing with the issue of blowing/drifting in open areas but not in towns. They used to have a blowing snow advisory, but they got rid of that with their new emphasis on less confusing watch/warning products. Unfortunately, some useful warnings/advisories/watches were lost including the heavy snow warning, blowing snow advisory, etc.

I don't like how they got rid of all the old advisories and warnings as well. They were more specific instead of just winter weather advisory. I don't think it was a good decision. Maybe they will bring them back some day.

Thanks for the great post by the way. Where are you from?

Well I understand why they did it to a degree, but yeah, I think some could have remained useful. The idea was to have more general advisories/warnings with a description in the actual text of why they issued it, but how often does the general public read the text? Probably rarely ever.

Only people like us probably even realized they changed it. It just seems a bit "boring" to have fewer types of advisories being issued that could cover a myriad of different types of hazardous weather. Though most people could probably care less.

Certain ones make sense. I get why they removed the Heavy snow warning for example. Why have that and a wsw and a wwa? the 2 latter pretty much cover it without having the Heavy snow warning to confuse.

Heavy snow warning just sounds more impressive than winter weather advisory. WSW could cover wind while heavy snow warning was just snow. I really don't care much about wind so a wsw or even a blizzard warning can be a bit of a letdown.
