NYC's new 30 year snowfall normals

Nikolai

Recommended Posts

November: .3"

December: 4.8"

January: 7.1"

February: 9.2"

March: 3.9"

April: .6"

Total: 25.9"

Obviously the 2000s have significantly helped December and February, with Decembers from the last 10 years averaging over 8" and Februarys over 13". The January average remains relatively unchanged while March continues to decline.

The seasonal snowfall average for the last 10 years (January 2001-December 2010) is 32.1"

So now we have 1 good decade and two crappy ones. In other words we still have the numbers skewed downward just not as much anymore. It's a start :) I'm just glad people can't quote that bogus 22 inch average anymore.

You think an average of 26" is skewed downward?

For here, Colts Neck, the 2001-2010 period has been spectacular.

November: Trace

December: 9.6"

January: 6.5"

February: 14.0"

March: 4.5"

April: 0.7"

December has been great, with only 2 Decs having 0 snowfall, February has been amazing, only 2 Febs with 0 snowfall, January a little below average, but we've managed measurable snow in all but 1 Jan. March has been decent, with the MECS of March 2009 helping the average.

Average for the decade: 35.3"

I did't count this December in the averages...The season runs from October to May...The seasonal average is slightly different from using average monthly norms...I think smoothed normals are idiotic..

Uncle W, the smoothed normals seem to slightly increase the totals for some reason. My 30-year seasonal avg 1980/81-2009/10 is now 28.4", and my 30-year smoothed normal is an impressive 29.6".

We may need to start thinking about totals more similar to the 1870-1910 period in this area, considering the decadal trend in oscillations and more importantly the Dalton/Maunder like solar minimum. I definitely believe that NYC's average is closer to 28-29", and the 25-26" is still reflective of a couple poor decades.

i'm wondering when was the last time we had this much of a concentration of big snowstorms.... say 12"+

i see there were good snow years in the late 1800s...... but how many big storms were there?

i'm really getting addicted to the big storms.

2000-2010: 7 storms of 14" or more

1970-1999: 3 storms of 14" or more.

(middlesex county)
