mahk_webstah
I disagree. I think most people take the time and answer questions as quick as they can, given the fast pace. I know I try to answer questions and so does Will. Amen and thanks
ski MRG
Look I don't know what kind of weird gay club you guys have developed, but make sure you invite Zeus. We're mere mortals, can't. dendrite
I welcome and answer newbie questions almost daily, provide links etc. Jumping on here and making assumptions because certain people bust chops with each other that it is elite is wrong, many people hear have known each other and shared their passion for nearly twenty years. I am going to post a topic called newbie questions so people can ask and some here can answer. I also suggest that people start there own threads with weather related topics. Nobody knows everything here it is a group collaborative knowledge. I was about to suggest an education thread as well. Heck, I've been pulling for an education subforum on the main side. HoarfrostHubb
I really appreciate all of the knowledge that so many of the people on this board have shared with me. Scooter, Will, Tip (John), Steve, Ryan, Ekster,Mike, Pete, Jerry, Ray, and even Kevin, just to name a few. The list could go on and on( not purposefully leaving folks out) Many of them have responded politely, quickly, and with great thought to newbie questions I and many others have posted. I remember my first question - "What do you mean by 'torch'?" - what a noob Thank you again to all who have been kind to a weather weenie

MaineJayhawk
I'd bet my life that if HarveyLeonardfan asked at which temp water began freezing, right now, that he'd have a response in pretty short order. The problem is that most newbies only care enough to come out of the word work right around the times of big events, when questions of that nature are less likely to be catered to for reasons already stated. When I read Harvey's post I had the same thought that you outlined -- during the leadup to events and things are happening fast and furious there either just isn't time or the post gets buried quickly. The time to ask questions would be a time like now when no models are coming out and the next event is 6 days away (not including the Rev's phantom clipper Wednesday). In short, we're friendly folk. moneypitmike
LOL. Can tell you're not a skier, Skiing has been great and soft conditions are never bad. Nothing like bashing through soft corn snow bumps. I'm in full winter sports mode and having a blast despite the warm weather of the past couple days. More snow on the way Mike, timed almost perfectly around your upcoming absences. Go figure. Totally bums me out. We're visiting my daughter's in MD, so that's worth missing a 78 redux. As far as the trip to Jamaica though, that's a work "thank you". Supposed to be for 5 days, I told them I could only go for two nights (which amounts to about 30 hours of awake time in Montego Bay. I'll have about the same amount of time in transit/customs. lol If think a week on the Tug might be an incentive......lol

Jen_CentralMass_Wx
There is indeed a sense of elitism on this board and this manifests itself during big events when innocent and novice posters lacking in weather knowledge ask quick and easy questions that are routinely ignored, but even if you're not part of the clique it's a great source for up to the second weather updates that you can't find anywhere else. maybe so, but the not formally-educated enthusiasts still get roasted for not making posts in the way the cliques want

I don't think that is the best way to be accepted into any group, cliques aside.
CT Rain
Do you think that it may have something do with the pace at which the main threads flow during big events.....just a shot in the dark here..... There is amply opportunity to learn on this board because many are willing to teach, but those folks would probably be better suited to ask those basic questions during slower times.....like now. The pace at which threads scroll during large events is ridiculous. At least for me, especially leading up to and during a big event, I don't have a ton of time to respond to questions. I'm typically at work and have a ton of stuff to do. I try to post my thoughts and have some banter but I'm really in a time crunch. It may come off as elitist but IMO the best way to learn is sit back and listen, take notes, and ask questions when things are quiet.

More snow on the way Mike, timed almost perfectly around your upcoming absences. Go figure. I loved the conditions the last two days but seem to be in the minority. It cleared out fast yesterday. Man, what an interesting drive down to the s-shore. Pea soup fog once you got off Rt 3, and they (Hanover) have twice the snow I have. Not a blade of grass showing. It was also 40 there too, while I was 48 at home. It must have been the combo of existing snowpack and water logged snow from this recent storm. People still have snow on the roofs. I continue to lose snow. Maybe 60-70% left, but shaded areas still 8-10". Lets end this disaster. What was interesting to me is areas that got the same amount in the reports had no snow vs several inches. There's more snow in the Hanover area than there is anywhere else I drove along 95 in Maine/SNH/MA Again...is it sleeting anywhere? What's with the bright banding? Serious rain. Right...aside from the scrolling issue and the pace, we have folks like you whose livelihood is determening sensible wx impact, which can very between a historic blizzard and P Cloudy; the difference between the two being determined by a subtle nuance within the flow. Not the time to focus on newbie questions, yet that is when they show up.

weathafella
I think some of the posters issues stem from 2 ways we've approached this discussion over the past 15 years. The early years were often in live chat...intimate, personal...too much so often, but designed for quicker and freer exchange. I personally am more suited to this format now but it may have been easier for me to break in for a number of reasons. One of which I was already advanced in years with all kinds of life experience and had been insulted publiclly in far more humiliating ways than this bb. But the point they raise is well taken and we should at least understand why they are coming at it from that perspective even if we don't agree with it from our own points of view. CoastalWx
36.9\36......still several inches left here. Highly variable here. Bare where it drifted and torched, while shaded areas are snow covered fairly deep. I think the nights where the burbs cooled off really helped them. I suffered a similar fate to the hill towns, but luckily have a fairly decent snowcover left. I don't radiate for sh*t.

Yes, I also think back in 15 years ago when we were chatting along with Scott and Steve and a few others it was a bit easier to learn. There wasn't as much info floating around. In the early days we were all using the same data and the live chat made asking questions and discussing it a bit easier.

Yea, the lower spots away from the immediate shorline and urban centers (mby) really benefit from that. Even looking at mesonet near my locale, some spots are still in the lower 40's.....times like this are when it pays to be at only 111'.

I don't think that is the best way to be accepted into any group, cliques aside. I have to say that as a relatively new member here - lurker from jan last winter to a new posting member this winter, it's posts like this one that can be intimidating to someone new on the board. You're questioning that person's subjective feelings about how they are treated. There aren't any quotes that can support such an assertion since it's entirely subjective. Irregardless of that, I think this is an outstanding group of well informed enthusiasts and generally welcoming to new members (you included ray don't mean to pick on you by pulling out this quote). From a fellow newbie to the other newbies/lurkers don't be intimidated by the regular group of posters that seem like a clique they just have a weird way of welcoming us newbies but they mean no harm. Just refrain from IMBY posts and try to add substance to the discussion if you feel the need to post. Two newbie questions of my own. 1. Got a gift card to B&N for xmas and looking for a good intro book that is accessible (ie not too technical) in order to learn some of the met basics. 2. Can someone link me to the site that has a layout of all the area temps - i lost the bookmark on it.

It's really cool to see you...then a 14 year old kid.....and always a nice boy....now as a TV met after having spent some academic time. Brian Monahan posts on the subforums from FL...he was wxcentral. Remember PSUPete...he was in HS...had a different name that I can't remember.....people always gave him sh*t about his snow measurements. MDFwx is someone I lost track of but kept in touch with for a long time. Marcus and Randy used to post with us then...Randy's name was DCscrewed for awhile during some pretty bleak winters for many of us. The night before the 1/25/00 with messenger (then Scottne) at his best with wxcentral while DT,LC, and many others were slapping them around was a classic. And they verified!
