ict1523
Ferocious winds kicking up the last half hour too anybody else ? I feel like I had stronger gusts around 10-11PM, but the sustained winds right now are definitely up there. Picked up very quickly along with snow intensity. Pepsi More like several shots of espresso. I havent caught up on sleep in months and now that I have time Im watching a blizzard. Absolutely pouring snow now. earthlight
I will never TRULY know since I was only 8 during the Blizz of 96, but Im starting to consider this as the best snowstorm of my life. I'm going outside to measure officially...but I had an average of 29.8 about 40 minutes ago. This is the best of my life and it's a landslide. NJDC Wx
I will never TRULY know since I was only 8 during the Blizz of 96, but Im starting to consider this as the best snowstorm of my life. I was 11 in '96 and spent that storm and this in Marlboro, right by you. '96 was always a benchmark for me..it may have been beaten. Certainly on par. I dont want this to end but i cant wait to see this all in daylight.
SACRUS
I live in Old Bridge NJ and it is RIPPING snow here and all cars are buried and there are 4-6 foot drifts. I've never seen anything like this. This is definitely one of the tops and Ive been through a bunch in my years. I will say '96 still takes the cake. This and last year's were something else to watch. The storms from yesteryear were different to track, no internet no TWC or cable. So in a away there wasnt the buildup and reward of the recent 10 years or so. Anyway good to see all the Staten Island and Broolyn folks in here. Spent most of my life in the holy city of brooklyn and a little stint in Staten Island too.
lindywx
Fortunately it was a sneeze free environment...literally nothing went wrong with this setup as far as getting the storm up the coast. Congrats to everybody in this thread for an amazing 5-7 days of analysis and discussion. You guys really make this is all so much more fun. It's a learning experience for everybody and it's just been an awesome, awesome week. Snow seems to be picking up again. The bands coming from far Northeast NJ could give me my final push to 30". I'm running on like two hours of sleep in three days--as soon as the 12z GFS came around on Christmas Eve I knew things were getting serious and sleep would not be give. Awesome stuff dudes. John, I'm thrilled that you got to experience what may be a once in a lifetime event. I recall last year that you were on the outside looking in during the the Dec. 19th. storm. You put so much time and effort into this board so I'm glad you got the ultimate payoff here. To put this storm in perspective, if you were outside the Mega Band, from a snowfall rate standpoint, there was zero wow factor, but in the wind department it exceeded Feb 78 . When you add all of the ups and downs emotionally in tracking this storm due to model inconsistencies it will go down as a memorable storm for me regardless of the amount of snow I received. So, congratulations to you and everyone else that experienced the ultimate "snowfreak" pay off........Vinny
Absolute Humidity
just measured 25 in back yard, 24 front and away from house, this awesome, may not rival my 28.7 from 1996 but sure is getting there. Holy.... la nina?
cold&cloudy
PA is robbing us of any extra snow. We'll be lucky if we reach a foot at this point. Still a good storm nonetheless. Glad you folks over in Eastern NJ and in the city got a good dumping.
SACRUS
Bayonne, Newark, Elizabeth, Union and Eastern Middlesex on into Staten Island still in the good stuff. Southe of there into Monmouth too.

Climatology always evens out..it's been a lucky year or so for me here but I am sure you will get your mega event soon enough. December 19 wasn't bad here..but I was def. on the sidelines a bit for a good portion of the event. It was the March 09 event that was the real gut wrencher...I was in subsidence the entire time. But this storm was so amazingly rewarding, I've never really felt anything like it. Now I know what it's like to track something for so long and cash in at the end. Probably bad that I experienced this..as 98 times out of 100 they are let downs when you track them from that range.
RUNNAWAYICEBERG
96 was looong duration and more overunning precip, covered wider area...... this had little overunning, but deeper/stronger, snow amounts varied greatly depending on mes bands. kinda LES like..... SACRUS
NYC 2 20 inch snows in one year - maybe so. Also would be 3 10"+ in one calender year.
Manny
Stil going strong here, heavy snow and impressive winds from that last moderate-heavy band right over us, but it's almost gone. Best Storm I've ever experienced, will remember this for a long time.

This is the best of my life and it's a landslide. Amazing how folks so close can see it so Different..The 96 storm Blew this storm out of the Water for me I had 32" while been stuck around 12 for the past 2 hrs with this one..I suppose if I were in your shoes I would say this rivaled 96 but the Severe cuttoffs with this storm has put the damper on things for alot of folks on the other side of the heavy stuff.. BL03
Not gonna measure yet but from my knee to floor is 22-24" .. so I think I got around that much if not a couple more inches on SI.
Wxnyc
It's good I woke up at. 3 this is almost the best part of the storm heaviest snow strongest winds next 30-45 minutes as that deformation drops collapses south and eastward. We are getting pummeled here in Brooklyn -staten island .

Oh without a doubt the areal coverage and intensity is not nearly as large..but for my specific location we are getting close to the 96 accumulation and the intensity of this storm is getting there as well...we sat in heavy frontogenic forcing for 8 hours or more tonight..and the winds are absolutely insane as well. Snow is plastered up on the houses..cars are lumps in the snow..it's ridiculous. So it's a much more location specific event..but it's up there. Beats Feb 06 at my location. Nikolai
Got into manhattan at 2, driving to brooklyn in a friend's SUV now. Omg. Heavy snow and I have never ever seen roads this bad in NYC no less. The city is compleeeetely incapacitated and i'd guess well over 20" has fallen. About to go over the williamsburg bridge.. Wxnyc
You guys know what else I realized this is also unique that there was no sleet ice etc. Even 96 had a few hours of sleet here south Brooklyn during the Hight of the storm. This one was pure snow.

usjusticeman
Hello again everybody! It seems blizzards bring me out from the cold. I last was here when I won my bet for a Peter Luger dinner in the February 19th storm 2010, calling for 17+ in Central Park, three days out. I never collected, lol. Now, this Philly boy has come home, moving back two months ago. Any word on storm totals through this time in NYC and Philly, which appear to be the leaders here? Also, best wishes to all. Be safe.
