RUNNAWAYICEBERG
Fortunately it was a sneeze free environment...literally nothing went wrong with this setup as far as getting the storm up the coast. Congrats to everybody in this thread for an amazing 5-7 days of analysis and discussion. You guys really make this is all so much more fun. It's a learning experience for everybody and it's just been an awesome, awesome week. Snow seems to be picking up again. The bands coming from far Northeast NJ could give me my final push to 30". I'm running on like two hours of sleep in three days--as soon as the 12z GFS came around on Christmas Eve I knew things were getting serious and sleep would not be give. Awesome stuff dudes. Ditto.. thank you for your maps and analysis.
BL03
wow OH MY GOD wow what a storm.... best since 96 and may be better for me. There is a NYC sanitation plow truck stuck on my side block and the snow is LITERALLY up to my knee's NOT in drifts!!!!! I HAVE NEVER seen this in my life..... I walked home from my friends house which is usually a 10 min walk where i was most of the day and it took me over 30 min to get home...and i was lucky a plow came by and cleared a road for me (that plow also was stuck for a good few minutes after rounding a turn). I was outside 3 times today and never have I experienced this kind of heavy snow and strong winds in recent memory..last time was 96 but I was young and didn't do Jebwalks... lol Vis is almost nothing only see lights in distance and no side streets are cleared currently. They were fine around 7pm but now only SOME major roads are passable. Amazing! Def a Blizzard and the first real one since 96!! Can't measure snow now but it was up to my knee's and still hammering me in N SI!

famartin
i agree with an earlier poster that b/c of the wind, the snow total reports will be all over the place and the nws mets will have their hands full with removing the bad obs. this may end up being a train wreck for sure. I'm very curious also as to what the CoCoRaHS reports will look like
tmagan
Some things that should be done: 1) All ten threads saved by somebody. 2) A folder which contains some of the model runs for the seven days leading up to the storm.
famartin
looks like Mercer, Middlesex and Union Counties were the sweetspots for this storm while Warren ,Sussex and Hunterdon were the Snow Hole locations. Somerset County was the line of Demarcation.. Hunterdon which Borders Somerset on the west side has about 7 or 8 inches while Middlesex and Union border Somerset to its SE and NE have 2 ft.. Somerset had parts have around 10 so far and other parts closer to 20.. Crazy stuff.. Not my side of Mercer. Just reached 10.0" even at 3AM. NJDC Wx
Worth a first post on AmericanWx. Western Monmouth is absolutely getting destroyed right now. I simply cannot go to sleep. My totals are in line with others from the area - 20-24 inches right now. Snow still very heavy, winds are howling - drifts on a west facing garage are reaching the top of the garage. Cars buried, white out conditions, 19 degrees on the backyard reading. Phenomenal. Getting close to matching Jan '96 at this point.
famartin
Between Feb 2006 and last winter (2009) I was screwed in every single storm...didn't matter what the setup, I was screwed. March 2009 was by 10 miles...I sat in flurries the entire event. That being said I will never complain again after last winter and now this storm is just a giant, huge chunk of icing on the cake. It's been an unreal stretch here. My screwjob period is longer. Haven't seen a solid foot since February 2004. Have gotten screwed in one way or another at every opportunity since then. Granted I moved around somewhat... but still, you'd think I'd have seen something at some point. Then again, I suppose I did screw myself by moving to Elko. Still some time left in this one but its running out. Up to 10.0" even as of 3AM. Can we do another 2" before it ends? I'd think not, but stranger things have happened... weatherweather
With that band that set up over eastern PA, are their totals higher than the parts of NJ that got stuck in the middle of the deform bands? edit- by in the middle i mean in between obv
nzucker
Not my side of Mercer. Just reached 10.0" even at 3AM. Yeah...there's a huge disparity between those who have gotten hammered with heavy snow and those who sat on the sidelines of that mega-band. I don't really agree with the SPC that it's been here in Westchester, seems as if it's further west oriented NNW to SSE through Franklin Lakes and Newark back towards Staten Island. I'm literally amazed that some people are reporting close to 30" from this storm; we've been lucky to crack a foot here, I'm thinking 14-15" will be the final total for Dobbs Ferry, definitely a solid MECS but not an historical storm for Westchester in terms of total snowfall. Winds and temperatures dropping into the teens were something else though.
BL03
Finally another Staten Island poster, I was worried I was exaggerating or something. I am in awe of what I am seeing. I have no idea how much we have but it is the most snow Ive ever seen easily. Just crazy out there. Yea i really am shocked at what I COULD see outside since it is still hard to look in front without getting pounded with wind whipped fine snow powder! The storm was just another major storm until 7-8 ish and then it went into historic mode and now just insane. I could say SI is officially paralyzed! Wxnyc
Wow just wow woke up at 3am it's pounding snow deformation band converging on the city there has to be 22-24 inches on the ground here in Brooklyn , drifts to 6 feet I've been around since 83 this is insane I think if this band sticks around this storm will go down as the biggest in NYC history. Amazing....!
Manny
Looks like NYC might try to clutch this, just rack up the points. I can't believe after a week of gut-wrenching tracking. John is right, it's been so much fun, and now we have another historical storm in our house.

Atleast another 4 inches since then. My car can not be seen at all. AMAZING and it's getting worse in this band!

Kingwill
Not my side of Mercer. Just reached 10.0" even at 3AM. Same story here The other end of Somerset County has 10 inches more than me according to reports..This may have been an epic storm for some but nothing more than a nice snowstorm for me as I had one storm last year that produced similar amounts with knowhere near the hype this one has received.. The storm was just another major storm until 7-8 ish and then it went into historic mode and now just insane. I could say SI is officially paralyzed! Ha, very true. Staten Island is paralyzed. My sis and I went for a walk before and Amboy Road was completely unplowed by me and cars were stranded on roads everywhere. Plows will be unable to pass until those cars are dug out. I have cars on my block that are completely gone, like you wouldnt even know they were buried under snow if you hadn't seen them before. I was 8 for 96 so don't remember it as well, but I think this may exceed it in terms of crippling us.
