NYC/PHL Dec 26-27 Boxing Day Blizzard Part 10

Indeed it is! I just went outside to measure and it's coming down much harder than it was an hour ago...very close to 15" now in the hopefully "good measuring spots".

Hopefully it sits over us and slowly dies off, and doesn't pivot away. If it does we could add maybe 4-5" more to our total. If we're snowing here until 8am, I could see us making it to 20" if the banding cooperates.

That's what I measured around 1:15 AM. I've probably had a little more since then, maybe an inch, but not too far off. My backyard averaged 18" and my front yard averaged 22", so I split the difference and called it 20". It's very tough to get an even remotely scientific measurement. It's weird to think I've gotten so much, because it seemed like 15" or so would be the max possible amount here. The total in the morning might end up closer to 23 or 24.

Winds have been kind of touch and go here, but I did have a gust to 36 a short while ago - so there have been some strong gusts. I think the low tracking a bit further east (compared to the coast-hugging model runs from Saturday) kept the really strong winds to LI and points east, though a lot of stations in NJ still managed to get around '96 wind levels. EWR had some impressive sustained/gust values earlier. As the low pulls away and the flow turns more NW, we might see some more gales in NJ and lots of blowing snow.

Wow, in Oakland? That is about a ten minute drive from Vernon. I'm going to go outside and measure again. The totals in NE Morris County are impressive compared to my measurements here in NW Sussex.

looks like Mercer, Middlesex and Union Counties were the sweetspots for this storm while Warren ,Sussex and Hunterdon were the Snow Hole locations. Somerset County was the line of Demarcation.. Hunterdon which Borders Somerset on the west side has about 7 or 8 inches while Middlesex and Union border Somerset to its SE and NE have 2 ft.. Somerset had parts have around 10 so far and other parts closer to 20.. Crazy stuff..

Measured in several different spots, and got an average of 20 inches. Not quite the earthlight jackpot, but still awesome. BTW John is pretty lucky. I remember almost every storm last winter, he got a little more than everyone else in north-central Jersey. He seems to be in the perfect spot there and keeps getting lucky with the banding storm after storm.

That band of heavy snow in eastern Middlesex county is just a few miles to my east right now. Only light snow here right now.

John did OK last winter but he suffered some bad screw-jobs in 08-09 with the December and March storms...only had like 4" in each of those in Scotch Plains whereas I had 8" and 10" respectively here in Westchester County. He also didn't get as much as SE NY in the Snowicane, where the highest totals were in the 26-32" range. I've been lucky although I knew this wasn't "my" storm when I saw how the banding was lining up in NJ. This also wasn't an elevation storm where being at 350' in a wooded area helps, pretty uniform totals around the county.

We were under that intense band for a few hours during the evening and got the 2-3"/hr snowfall rates and gusts near blizzard criteria. It seemed like the band stopped once it got past West Milford and into Sussex County, then headed east and dissipated.

Still nice awesome heavy snow here in Queens Kew Garden Hills. Only regret is that I didn't hear thundersnow yet and I've been dreaming of hearing that. Anyone have an idea what time it should end. I don't want it to :( Definitely best snow storm I've ever witnessed.

Historically the TSSN corridor has shown it likes to setup in the area from EWR east northeastward across NYC and LGA....this event though it seemed to skip over Queens...Farmingdale's ASOS did report LGT DST W a few times which leads me to believe there was some TSSN in east queens or west Nassau

Between Feb 2006 and last winter (2009) I was screwed in every single storm...didn't matter what the setup, I was screwed. March 2009 was by 10 miles...I sat in flurries the entire event.

That being said I will never complain again after last winter and now this storm is just a giant, huge chunk of icing on the cake. It's been an unreal stretch here.

My area must have just missed it then. But I wouldn't be surprised if totals are slightly higher in "eastern" parts of Vernon (Cliffwood Lakes) and in Hardyston. We have gotten a few good gusts of wind though. Had a 35 MPH one around 2:20.

Just went outside and my crude measurements ranged between 10.5 and 11 inches. Still made out pretty well for being in the "snow hole". Would be interesting to see the totals in West Milford.

Thanks for the info. Some Queens posters did report some thundersnow. I just missed it I guess where I'm at. Truly an epic Blizzard here though. What time do you think things will be finished tomorrow morning?

You definitely deserve it, and this has to be the best storm I've witnessed and encountered head on with pure blizzard conditions and major accumulations/thundersnow/intense dynamics.

I have a feeling you'll reach 30"

Yeah, I wasn't on here before last winter. Glad he has been doing so well last winter and now with this storm, since he got screwed over in previous winters.
