I assume those "pingers" look like little pieces of styrofoam? It does sound a bit like convection is playing around with the snow crystals giving them graupel like properties even without a warm layer.

Yeah I do not think its possible for it to be actual sleet. The sounding doesn't support it. It has to probably be some little weird bubble of lifting/snow crystal diagnostics going on.

How close to the water are you?

I'm probably about a dozen miles N of where you are... I don't have any instrumentation other than temperature (23.5 right now)... Wind is gusting, snow is snowing, but I don't believe that I'm seeing anything like what you are describing... I go outside every 2 hours or so to brush snow off of a "garage in a box" tent structure and to knock it off of some low branches, best guess is 5" deep now.

Elevation here is about 450 feet ASL...

I am 200 yards from the sal****er marsh, bdr just gusted to 50knots its insane down here

50 knots bdr!!!!!!!!

Not surprising. I've seen a few gusts down here on the sound in Greenwich that look like they are around 50 mph with frequent gusts generally in the 35-40 range. Not a ton of snow here so far, but visibility is generally in the 1/4-5/8SM range owing more to the wind gusts than prolific snowfall rates.

Yes, absolutely! it looks like those little packing styro pellets -

AND, come to recall ..eh heh, almost every time I've been in thunder snow situations it was accompanied by a mix in with this p-type. I also just saw flash of lighting and heard thunder in Ayer. My Met buddy called me from down the road in FIT because he got that too.
