RU848789
Holy CSI banding Batman! Spent the last 4 hours in the pub, then shoveled, then took measurements as of 9:15 pm (not bothering with the snowboard this storm - just too much wind and haven't been around enough) all over the backyard (it's relatively quiescent) and got an average of about 13-14"; the low and high are about 10" and 16", whereas in the unprotected front yard, some areas are only a few inches and I have some drifts of almost 3 feet. It's a freakin' blizzard out there (or at least close to it), with snow falling at 2"/hour the last 3-4 hours, winds sustained around 20-25 mph and gusts to at least 30-35 mph; visibility is maybe 1/8 of a mile (220 yards). One of the most beautiful snowfalls I've ever seen and looks like the bands are pivoting right over NE NJ/NYC, including my area, so we might hit 20-24" at this rate, especially considering the latest AFD from OKX, below. Most I've ever seen is Jan 96, with about 28" in my backyard - would be cool to threaten that. Just did one more round of shoveling, although it's still pouring snow out there, so I'm sure I'll have to do one more round in the morning. As of 1:00 am we have an average of about 20" on the ground in my backyard (range of about 16-24"); some of the drifts in the front yard are nearing 4 feet! We've sustained about 2" per hour from about 4 pm to 1 am (9 hours!), which is simply incredible. Radar still looks like we have a few more hours to go, so maybe we can make it to 24". Would love to be skiing in this gorgeous fluffy powder (just got a cast off a broken thumb, so no chance of that, lol). Have seen reports of 21-22" elsewhere, but we're obviously pretty close to the jackpot, which is unusual for Middlesex County. Visibility still less than 1/8 of a mile (and occasionally near zero during the big wind gusts - probably gusting to 40 mph at times). What an incredible, incredible storm. You are definately going over 24'' if you already have 20'' seeing that the band has nearly stalled right over NYC and ne new jersey... Congrats man. simpsonsbuff
NW Bronx: 21 / 21, somewhere in the high teens or low twenties on snowfall, which matches the Westchester border estimates found here http://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=NWS&issuedby=OKX&product=PNS (which were taken a few hours ago). RUNNAWAYICEBERG
Somethings up with KFRG's obs. during this event, for some of the duration all they report is freezing fog. i can only describe it in simple terms but i think Ray (Famartin) think i spelled it right...but yea, he said something like (its not word for word, might not even be 100% accurate) the obversation tower's visibility gets pretty low, they cant really tell if its blowing snow or heavy snow falling but they can confirm that its cold, FREEZING, and they cant see anything, FOG .... nzucker
Dobbs Ferry, NY 22.7/21 SN 12.5" total (estimated, nearly impossible to measure as there's areas with nearly 20" snow and some bare ground showing). Radar looks like it's about to fill in for one more go....thinking we'll finish around 15" here. Very respectable snowfall but not a HECS for southern Westchester. Still snowing hard here, and the deform band that pounded E NJ is headed in this direction. We could be in some good stuff for another few hours assuming it doesn't start to die out. Outside my window it looks like more than the 16" or so I probably have, it looks more like 2 feet because of all the drfting. I still think we can make a run at 20" if we remain under heavy echos until after daybreak.

Absolutely a classic in these areas that will be talked about for many years. I think even without the thundersnow that NYC and west had, the impact to us is worse so far than any event last winter. It's going to be one long slog tomorrow digging out. Could even be local ground blizzards like the Dakotas often see.
