Observations for the Christmas Storm II

Radar sucks in my area. ON the fringe of GSP, RAL and FCX. Works out OK in the summer with high topped storms but in the winter the beams are to high by the time they reach my area to show the lower level snow clouds and precip.

Hopefully that'll help us with the apparent lull in central SC moving this way.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never given that much thought, but you're exactly right. I've not gone a second without some semblance of snow since noon today, yet the radar hasn't been too impressive at times.

I know what you mean, its not that impressive right now but it continues to come down. I feel like we in the Triad got really lucky with the earlier snowfall due to our temps being right.

Great point. I've never given that much thought either, but it's very true. I'm on the fringe of the Blacksburg radar.

Just went out to try and measure again and it is pretty incredible.. alot of snow. Even still, measuring in many areas only gives me 5" - 5 1/2"

Snow still falling here but it is very small flakes now, tiny grains. Looks like I may be just barely NW of the heavy returns on the radar heading this way.

Love the banding that's getting ready to train over my area:

http://radar.weather...ct=N0R&loop=yes

Anyway, down to 31° with 2 inches on the ground and piling with moderate to occasionally heavy snowfall :mapsnow:

I'm impressed with how we've done considering other factors to tonight.

Linwood rd from sparrow springs to Myrtle school was completely snow covered on the way in from my sisters tonight. If that deform band sets up, it's going to get even sketchier out there.

Another weather-related observation...

Duke Energy currently has 7,298 customers without power within its NC and SC service area. Guilford County (Greensboro/High Point) leads the pack with 1,878. Davie County is second with 1,418.

Progress Energy has 868 customers without power. Almost all of them are in Buncombe County.

My Honda generator is full of gas and ready should the need arise! whistle.gif

Robert, you are going to get raked over the next 3 or 4 hours. I think you'll wind up with 4 to 6 inches. I'm satisified at this point with my mod/heavy snow and it was enough to get everything solid white!

They've dropped back to salt shakers now, a few medium sized flakes. Pay close attention to that radar and you'll see every time some heavier elements approach, they diminish right before reaching me. They also keep splitting west and east of me. Its like its Summer all over again.

i think randolph county got the short end in the central part of the state. we only have a dusting or so west of asheboro. started snowing again around 7 or 730. think we missed out on the 2 or so inches those who got it this afternoon got. looks like some heavy stuff headed this way from way down in GA tho so hopefully it adds up quick. RUC shows snow for the next 12 hours or so. I will be driving home in this in a bit.

Ive gone over the inch mark, Just got in and its a winter wonderland out tonight, I noticed a few things, The snow is becoming powdery and I have north winds, acting like they want to turn NE. They have just started picking up, but light. The moisture on the trees has frozen and the trees are catcing every flake. I'm sure wind will become a factor latter on, so those who get the heavy wet accums, need to be mindfull, espeacilly up in the NE corner of the state if things pan out as forecasted

Hey Robert how much you think this could dump on us?

I'll never predict 6" or more in southern Cleveland County again. It can be done safely for other counties, but not here. Just too many weird things keep happening . I can understand the Summer phenomenon fine but can't explain its Winter cousin. Anyway, I'd guess you and I could get a couple more inches if we're lucky. I'm right at 1" still. The last band was heavy but didnt' last.

The cold air is just lagging too far behind the precip. Snow is over here for the most part and the cold air still isn't here. Steady at 31.5 or so and now that the snow has stopped, I've gone up a few tenths.

Looking back across to our NW the highest temp I can find is 32. I don't think it will go up much more.

It makes me wonder what truly is going on. Why are winter storms just starting to recently do this?
