Observations for the Christmas Storm II

I have had a trip planned for tomorrow from Savannah to Chapel Hill (planned well before this storm). I'd be taking I-95 and then I-40. Then I have to travel on Highway 54 for a couple of miles at Chapel Hil, itself. I'm seriously considering postponing it due to both potentially treacherous roadways (due to being slippery from snow/ice and possibly having to deal with fallen branches) as well as possible widespread power outages in/near Chapel Hill. Does anyone near that area have an opinion as to whether I should just go ahead and delay my trip to Tue or Wed.? Is it a huge mess all over that part of NC as well on I-95 in SC and NC leading up to I-40? TIA.

GAWx, North Carolina has done an outstanding job of snow removal this month. Here in Winston-Salem, snow plows came through residential areas early this morning. The roads were scraped bare. Very few roads are treacherous now, although one should always watch out for occasional ice patches. The interstates and major thoroughfares are in excellent condition.

I'll add that I drove from Asheville to Charlotte tonight and even Asheville interstates were doing ok. Once I got down I-40 past Black Mountain the roads were absolutely clear to Hwy. 321 to I-85 into Charlotte. I can't vouch for the eastern part of the state but I imagine that if you are on interstates you will be fine.

This was from a friend of mine up in the N. GA mountains up around Blue Ridge. 10" of snow on a rail outside their cabin! WOW!!

Amazing! Trying to temper my jealousy. Blue Ridge is not too far from me.

Still have flurries, may have picked up another inch overnight. Getting to nearly 48 hours with snow falling.:weight_lift:

Awesome! Flakes still flying here too but you can see the starts and moon. LOL. Actually had blowing snow last night which I don't normally see.

Weaverville obs 18.1° & windy light snow falling. We got almost 3 more inches of snow last night. So we are around 13 inches. Had some very heavy snow at times last night. Temp. went from 19.2° at 12:54 to 19.9° at 2:35 and stayed there for an hour. During that time I did an obs & it was snowing harder than it had during the whole event. I am now at 48 hrs of constant snow. Dec 18 2009 & Christmas 2010 storms have given me a combined 31 inches. Nice to get payed back for some of the no snow dues. Any other Mnt. obs out there this AM?

Did some blowing here last night too, my truck in the carport is covered. I am supposed to drive to Murphy, NC this am but I do not think I am leaving the hill, sure will not be able to return up it!

I will give NCDOT big props for the way they handled this storm. Driving down to Huntersville on Christmas morning it looked like they had pre-brined most of I-85, and driving back on Christmas night as the Triad started to get raked and the snow started to stick, they had plows and salt trucks out in force between Salisbury and Greensboro. The city was also aggressive about pre-storm brining here in Durham and I think it helped tremendously. Yesterday morning, the 2-3" of snow that dropped on the streets overnight melted away from underneath and was pretty much gone by 2 pm despite the air temps staying around 30-31.

I don't know if it was careful blowing about of snow from trees or what, but the road is now completely covered again, as is my car hood, windshield and top. It looks like we actually got a round of light snow last night. Can anyone verify if that happened?

did you not see the radar last night?

We arrived safely in Chapel Hill at 4:30 PM. As expected, there was no snow on the roads and it was too warm for ice, especially with the sunshine. The NCDOT must have done a stellar job. Thanks to those here who gave me advice.

As I headed north on I-95 this afternoon, I started seeing snow on the ground just south of Florence. It continued to increase in depth until it was quite impressive by the time I reached the NC/SC border. I saw a heck of a lot of snow the rest of the trip up I-95 and I-40 making for some pretty scenery. We ate at Brixx Wood Fired Pizza.

I just drove from chapel hill to new bern. snow all the way. Most of the worst primary roads were near i-95/smithfield where turn lanes were yet to be plowed and there were ice and drifts in the travel lanes. worse secondary road is right in front of maple view farms ice cream shop off dairyland rd in orange co.

I had a friend that drove from Atlantic Beach to Boone on Sunday they had snow on the ground from just past Havelock all the way to Boone.....it was actually mixing snow and rain on the island when they left. Greenville reported snow for 20 straight hrs during the event....this is a top 5 storm for me, only times I have seen more snow here were 1980, 1989, and 2000.

Since I have been around (born in 1972) we have gotten a "footer" about every ten yrs 80,89,00,10.......sure hope I dont have to wait that long for the next......
