Observations for the Christmas Storm II

Have to say, you have had some major issues with sleet/boundary layer temps over the last year. We really need a good cold air damming setup, so we can finally not have to worry about sfc temps! It's hard to believe it's been probably 5 years since we had a true CAD setup.

Your right. Been a while since we have had that classic setup before a storm. Temperatures in the low to mid 30's with dew points in the upper single digits to lower teens before the precip starts with stiff northeast winds.

We always talk about the 80s being the good old days but I cant help but think we will be talking about these times the same way. Region wide we have been piling up impressive snow totals even with this year being La nina. Just goes to show climatology isnt perfect. I told my wife Ill be content to not see any more snow until next winter but I dont know how long that will hold. It sure is nice to get one like this under our belt so early in the season.

NE/E Raleigh faired better than RDU, that's how crazy the QPF is, very localized in some areas...it will be interesting to see the map drawn up by RAH.

Flurries is all that is left here.

RDU INTERNATIONAL AI 6.3 953 AM 12/26 0.8 BETWEEN 9-10 AM.

I agree with their totals, maybe 1" after 9am...haven't measured yet but I'm close to 7". Great storm! What a WILD ride guys!!!

Well, shucks. Thanks for the response, though. My official measurements yield around 8".

Snow showers actually are breaking out in advance of the upper low/trough axis... The precip in Charlotte is dissipating like I figured, but you can see new precip forming south of the triangle as the upper low approaches our area. Maybe we'll have enough moisture to squeeze out a bit more snow.

No doubt about it, it was a white Christmas for all practical purposes and I hope this one counts for "official" purposes.

By the way, congrats to you and lookout! Your region has been renamed the "jackpot zone". Screw zone is now ancient history Wow!!

Flurries continue here in SAV often blowing sideways in the strong winds.

 Thanks larry, That has a strange sound to it. Good to see you see some too. I find it remarkable that savannah has seen snow twice in a year too.

It's absolutely pouring snow out there right now. I'm in the heart of that band and the flakes have gotten bigger too. Visibilities are around a 1/4 mile if not less. Absolutely beautiful out there.

It's a shame the ground was not colder/frozen because I have no doubt I would have 6 inches by now. Unfortunately I know its being ate up from underneath. But as heavy as it is I think I'm gaining ground which is impressive for the middle of the day.

I'm beginning to think we might be entering into another era for climo. I've seen sticking snow, not for long, but sticking, 4 years running now. I can't remember ever seeing that before. I think something is afoot...beginning with the sun. Now if I can just get some cold air already in place, so I can do some street sledding..I'll be positive of a change. Because it is way long since I've had that pleasure. T

Congrats Bo!!! Long day it was for you yesterday!!

Went to bed last night after radar cleared and snow stopped with a touch over 2". Got up at 7am and it was snowing as bout as hard as it ever did. Blew me away! Measured 3.5" on deck railing before it stopped the heavy stuff, now flurries and melting

Ended up a total success though!

really cool Lookout. Cash it in!

I'll confirm that. We've got a surprisingly decent snowfall going on now in Harnett.

Thx Mark and Robert, it was a long day and night! I really feel fortunate now because we just took my daughter to a friends house 3 miles from here and they only got 1.5", most of it melted away already!

From this mornings heavy snow

Moderate snow breaking out again, large flakes. 11.5 inches at last check about an hour ago, near downtown Wilson. Winds also occasionally gusty.

Aside from the upslope guys, who are gonna get creamed later today/tonight, You will win 1st place on the board. I think I saw another Rocky Mount poster on here. My sister lives in Nash county to your north, they are over the 12 inch mark and still snowing. Not sure how the Greenville crowd is doing, It will come down to them and you. One of the best things about this storm is for once EVERYONE GOT HIT!

I'll wait and see how warm Thurs and Fri get before computing it all up. But what a December. Multiple minor snow events,White Christmas, Historic possible Coldest ever & alot of posters have already equaled or surpassed the seasonal average snowfall total. Next weekend its gonna warm-up, but hopefully we can get the -NAO to reset as we head into January. The moisture is gonna be hard to come by, but if we can get this pattern we had the past 3-4 weeks to repeat 3-4 weeks from the second week of Jan-the first week of Feb, this could be one of our best winters ever.

Tony, I did some street sledding in the car last night.we pulled into my street sliding diagonally. If my good sled wasnt broken I could use it out on the road right now. I walked around town and it is absolutely dead.

Good for you!! I love it when it is like that. Your king of the city :) Fide and I were worrying about temps yesterday and folks were wondering why, but down here without the cold temps in place before hand it just snows and goes. I have some patches around, but the best is on my snow board, lol. The streets and most everything but the roofs was just wet over night here. Got to have cold air in place when you are too close to the heat source. But I got to see it falling and sticking some on Christmas..so I call that my white Christmas..if I don't see better before I die, I'm content with ticking that off my list. T

The flurries at SAV, which lasted for a little over an hour, have stopped for now. Based on radar trends as well as models, I'm hoping for a second batch to start here around 2 PM.

Larry, with all this back behind me I can't help but think some will rotate in for you later. Glad you are seeing some..hope you can get some sticking so it will be two years running. Hope you had a great Christmas. Tony

7" on the board thus far, 8-9" everywhere in the grass, looks like 1 more decent band to come through which is currently along 95 from FAY to RWI, with scattered SN-showers after that into the evening. Not sure about 10" on the board, but should be well over 8" after all is said and done with. Much better than our inauguration day event in 2009!

Yeah, BMX has extended the WWA until 6PM thanks to that huge batch of wraparound moisture back in AL. Any mets think it will make it to GA?

Good to see you getting some snow Tony...yesterday was frustrating for a lot of us with ongoing temp issues. Here I'll go with 2"...my neighbor reported 2.5" early this morning and there are spots in the grass with close to 3" (and spots with much less) so I'll bump up my total a bit. A very nice treat on Christmas.

Pitt county is runing 8 in the west and 6.5 here for me in the eastern part of the county. Another band seems to be forming and slowly moving this way so hoping to pick up another inch or so.

One of the great storms cause just about everyone gets in on the action....I posted a video a page ago or so.

Thanks, man! I sure hope you get to use that great run of yours. Down the street into the yard, over the hump, and into the back fence, if I remember correctly, lol. Yep, I think that Ala. stuff makes it in here before it evaporates completely away. Glad you did so well. I think next time Rosie and NeGa are going to have to learn to share :)

All is good...football starting..Falcons to the Super Bowl...winter hasn't even started good and we've got snow already. Man, Jan. and Feb are going to rock with the block! T

Congrats to all who got good snow- kinda a screw here, right now I am in a narrow area between two snow shower zones on radar, I usually do not get nearly as much as the areas to my west in a backside setup and that is what is happening now. Oh well, the winter is young, and getting measurable snow three seasons in a row is probably a first for me in the past 30 years.

I might be starting to sound like a broken record here but holy hell is it coming down! It's every bit as heavy as it was during either of those storms last year. Flakes are big and coming down like crazy. Temp is up to 31. I wonder how long I can hold on to this..would love to hold on to it at least till sundown so some of this will accumulate more without the solar insolation. Man if it was just night time. It sucks that with heavy snow and temps below freezing, it's still hard to get good accumulation during the middle of the day. But it is coming down hard enough to accumulate where as before I think it was coming down just enough to make up for the melting underneath.

btw, I found my camera but I'm looking for my connector :arrowhead: I did take some pics though and will post them as soon as I can.

What a fantastic storm this has been. Looks like the snow is expanding for others in north Ga too, great to see.

You know what's also great is the falcons don't play today. I couldn't enjoy the snow if they were, as I would be on pins and needles all afternoon watching it :arrowhead:
