My final rain total is 3.12".  That was a lot of fun.  I love heavy rain and it has been a long time since the last heavy rain event.  There were a few lightning flashes, but it wasn't much up here in the cold air.

Since the April 10th snowfall, the forecast wet, active, and potentially severe period of weather has produced a grand total of 0.02" rain at DTW

0.25" of precip this morning. A little snow was mixed in (around 0.1" on the grass). Wet, chilly morning.

Nice.  How much do you have for the month now?  Sitting at 2.80" here so far.

This is the time of year we have better weather in Minnesota then lakeshore areas of Chicagoland. Near 70 yesterday and today.

Absolutely perfect spring weather. Starting to see some buds really swell on trees here.

You would think by the characterization of these threads (March & April) that this has been a cold and miserable spring. In fact, it's been one of the most favored springs on record with excellent planting conditions. By the end of the month, many places should be looking at a top 10 warmest spring season to date.

Dayton, Ohio, for instance, where the thread creator resides, is currently in 11th place, which places this season around the 92nd percentile of all years!

For the record, 1945 & 1946 were not observed at the airport. Temperatures were quite a bit cooler at the airport site:

Yep, gotta deal with our London weather stretch. Will gladly take this over late April snow.

DVN confirmed 9 tornadoes from Sunday evening.

Picked up 0.65" this morning.  Up to 3.46" now for April.

Absolute top shelf day today

Had yet another 8am storm with loud thunder and streaks of lightning in the sky. A spicy cell moving quick to my north. This April has been nuts, based on memory I think its the most storms I've gotten in April, even more than some entire years! Also nearly the 3rd 8am storm this month. Tantalizingly 2 more days in my 10 day show storms - I'm up to 10 at least mostly from those multi round days. Harkens back to the late 90s.

Another top shelf one today, albeit a tad on the warm side with highs climbing into the 80s. Definitely a continuation of the same theme we've seen since March 1.

In the Motor City, this is 8th warmest spring to date, by mean high temperature (Detroit threaded record - 152 years). Prior to 2010, only 4 years were warmer (1945, 1946, 1976 & 1977). Definitely some elite company in there. I remember looking at spring temperatures in years like 1945, 1946, and 1921 as unbelievably hot back in the 90s.

4th warmest at Detroit City Airport (92 years).

It must be all thanks to March since April is running right about average for Detroit. April is still running a little below average up here. It’s funny too because as of now, there’s only been one “warm” month so far this year which was March. The year is running right around average also.

The average high temperature YTD for Detroit is 43.0F, which is 25th warmest [of 152 years in the threaded history], placing it around the top 16% of all years. Although only 3 years of the past 9 have been cooler (2022, 2019 & 2018).

In what I feel is somewhat unusual in recent times, the low temps are running slightly below average for the year even though the high temps are running above average. How do the low temps rank? How about the average temp?

The avg temp, which obviously is the main metric, ranks as a 2-way tie for 40th warmest year to date (Jan 1-Apr 24), so 39 years were warmer and 111 colder. The avg high temp ranks as a 3-way tie for 25th warmest, and the avg low ranks as a 4-way tie for 58th warmest. 

Obviously, this is entirely due to March/April (mostly March). I am not a fan of doing random rankings on a given day, its better to let each month play out. 

Jan-Feb ranked as a 2-way tie for 54th coldest at Detroit, meaning 53 years were colder & 97 years were warmer. The highs were a tie for 58th coldest & lows a tie for 53rd coldest.

 Detroit city temps are absolute fake garbage. I have told you many times, many non-first order stations have calibration issues that are left unattended. They arent the importance of a first order station (like DTW). The Detroit city thermometer has ran a little warm for a while, but it went bonkers in a week or two ago, running some 5-6F too high. DTX finally had the thermometer fixed a few ago per the coop leader.

I'm over-performing by a lot, up to 24C/75F - warmest day so far of 2025. The clouds stuck around a bit longer than I'd like til 2:30 now mostly sunny. First I've felt very warm doing activities out there too.

DET wasn't nearly as bad as has been the last 2-3 years.

If anything, it was often a hair cooler than DTW...

The median date for the first 80 of the year in Minneapolis is fast approaching on May 1st. Unless Monday overachieves it’s going to be later this year.

83 with full and a gentle breeze, just a banger of a day. Fired up the blackstone and made smash burgers. Extended looks pretty decent. Can’t wrap my head around next week being May already.

81 here today, 80 at MLI.  A few lazy showers popping up just to the southwest.
