Heavy sleet with some thunder and gusty winds on my walk to class this morning. Why the hell did I come here?

Everyone that lives in Michigan says this on days like today but once summer comes, there's not a better place be than in Michigan, particularly up north out on the lake or out on the links. Unfortunately it only lasts 5 months.

lol yeah, I'm looking forward to some 50s and 60s later this month, before I head back south for the summer (I know, the wrong direction :sun:)

Getting a bunch of storms this evening as expected, but what wasn't is the first had intense CGs; I counted 6. I typically don't get much cg lightning its rare, once a year. I've noticed my best lightning in recent years has been in April. This is also the most intense tstorm with a temp so low 3.5C at the time of the first. My DP has been floating 0.2 above my air temp since 9.

Didn't have the wait long for the 2nd, 20 mins later another randomly sprung up with frequent lightning but no cgs. That lasted nearly 45 mins over 100 strikes.  At 11:30 I now have a third round, thank God this isn't in the middle of the night like that one April 6th belter years ago.

Saying there is 5 months of Summer weather in Michigan might be a little generous.

With over 2 1/2" (over an inch and a half in the past 24 hrs.) of rain here in the past week and another 2-3" forecast for Friday-Sunday, we won't have to worry about drought for awhile. I may not get into my garden until May if this keeps up.

At least it's not going to be like the Ohio River valley. They might need boats to travel.

Lol theres nowhere near 5 months of summer in MI. Summer weather can span the course of 5 months, just as winter weather can span the course of 7 months...but it isnt constant. Realistically, you can count on a solid 3 months of summer and 4 months winter in southern MI and about 2 months summer and 5 months winter in northern MI. Regardless, it is a fantastic state for 4 seasons.

I had a total 24 hour rainfall of 1.83" (and a T of snow/sleet). DTW had 2.28" (and a T of snow/sleet). Very heavy rain for a time overnight. Nothing remotely close to severe.

Mine was broken up as 0.84" in the morning round and 0.99" overnight, while DTW saw 0.77" in morning round and 1.51" overnight.

This was the largest 24-hour rainfall at DTW since August 24, 2023 & the largest in Wyandotte since July 10, 2024.

Another story was the temps. The morning rain, which began as snow and mixed at times with sleet, came with temps hovering at 34-35F, miserable to say the least. Temps very slowly inched up into the 40s by nightfall, then rapidly rose from 49F to 64F in 1.5 hour around midnight. This is also where DST comes into play. Technically the temp at DTW was 49 at 11pm, 54 at 12am, and 62 at 12:59am, so 62 is yesterdays high. However, from March til November (until we fall back again), the daily temps that go into the climate are actually 1am - 12:59am, not 12-11:59pm. Always thought that was stupid but it is what it is.

Been hanging around you too much with the glass half full positive approach. 5 months of summer incoming.

I hope not lol. That's what's good about summer here. We get oppressive heat and humidity but it's nowhere near as long as so many other areas to our south and there are usually refreshing reprieves. Have lakes and rivers everywhere helps too.

And it's all relative too. Even an oppressive Summer (ala 2011 or 2012) for the Detroit area would be considered cool for the Deep South and Desert SW...

Do you HONESTLY enjoy summer in Texas? My cousin has a relative in Texas (lived there for decades) and they absolutely hate summer.

Let's just say I'll rather deal with Summers in Texas over the Winters downwind of the Great Lakes.

EDIT: And days like the ones we're expecting through the weekend (temps stuck in the 50s with nothing but stratocumulus and light stratiform rain/drizzle) only reaffirms how much I would hate having to deal with several months of it.

I always say that too. 2012 is the only summer that I can remember where it really felt like there was no relief. By the middle of July, temps over 90 felt normal.

Keep in mind, many places in the world are much colder than America. My wife is from the United Kingdom, and even a very cold summer in Detroit would be considered oppressively hot there.

MI summers are awesome.   1988, 1995 and 2012 are the hottest summers I experienced in MI.

I would says there are 5 months of what I call summer weather in MI; mid-May to mid-October.   Note: It has been a bit since we had a cold fall.  Plus I am well inland for the GLs to impact my temps much in May into June.

Hardcore summer weather, yeah, definitely not 5 months.
