April 2025 Discussion/Obs

The first 2 weeks of May looks to be on the wetter side. I think there will be a process of the fast west to east jet breaking down whereby initially we may see a few cut-off upper lows sitting over portions of the mid west or southeastern states. For most of April we've seen a ridge/Bermuda HP try to develop off the southeast coast and I think that's going to take a bit of a vacation as a strong southeasterly flow tends to set up over our region. It looks like near normal temperatures and above normal precipitation for most of the first half of May. It will be humid.

Got a new Davis PWS for the new house. My old Davis still working at the old house (we move in a month). I put the new station next to the old one and the readings are identical across the board. Pretty accurate weather stations, still the best IMO

Both my stations are VP2s, quality equipment IMO.

We are a good 7-10 days ahead here-saw a photo from 2015 on my facebook memory today-the trees were still bare

I just looked over the past 5 years on my camera roll, and this year is like a week behind the past 2 years. 2022 my flowering trees were full bloom the first week of April.  2021 about even with this year and 2020 about a week behind as well.  Prior to that I didn't really have pics from when I moved here for my first spring in 2017.

Only .12 here so far, and radar doesn't look promising. Slight chance we get hit by a downpour this afternoon. If not we're going to end up with less than a quarter inch, which would be pretty disappointing.

Same here, .12. Maybe a quick downpour in 40 minutes if that cell by Easton holds.

Some additional showers are possible this evening and tonight. Tomorrow will be the cooler day of the weekend with the temperature struggling to reach 60° in New York City.

Temperatures will rebound into the 70s early next week. Tuesday could be the warmest day of the week with the mercury reaching the upper 70s to perhaps 80°. April will end on a warmer than normal note.

The ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly was +0.6°C and the Region 3.4 anomaly was -0.2°C for the week centered around April 16. For the past six weeks, the ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly has averaged +1.08°C and the ENSO Region 3.4 anomaly has averaged 0.00°C. Neutral ENSO conditions will likely continue through at least early summer.

Early indications are that summer 2025 will be warmer than normal in the New York City and Philadelphia areas. The potential exists for a much warmer than normal summer (more than 1° above normal).

The SOI was +2.59 today.

The preliminary Arctic Oscillation (AO) was -0.464 today.

Based on sensitivity analysis applied to the latest guidance, there is an implied 98% probability that New York City will have a warmer than normal April (1991-2020 normal). April will likely finish with a mean temperature near 55.1° (1.4° above normal).

middletown ny; I just went through a heavy thunderstorm, driving bro that shit gave me the craziest adrenaline rush I've ever had in my life. I mean it was raining with buckets. Everybody on the road had to stop. I've never ever experienced something like that in my life. it was only for like 10 minutes, but it was crazy. It was scary.

Yep. I was just working on my veggie garden and what ya know, the soil is still dust 6” down. I really hope this isn’t another annoying dry period starting. Can’t go away for more then a couple days without potentially loosing my veggies. If you want premium plants watering has to be on point. I rent, and my land lords are nice enough to let me have my garden, but I can’t install permanent irrigation.

I've given up trying to explain because I'm tired of LB arguing there's no drought. Today's 1 inch is being sucked up by plants before it has a chance to soak in, it's still dry 6" down here too. Anyway... I'm going to set up a soaker hose on a timer for the garden. I have way too much of ME invested in it to let it wither when I go to Cape Cod for July 4th week.

Historical:

1834 - Killer frosts were reported in the Deep South. The frost was quite severe around Huntsville AL, and highlighted a backward spring in the South that year. (David Ludlum)

1884: Tornadoes were hard to capture on old cameras with their hard to use glass plate negatives. The first recorded photograph of a tornado was taken on this date by A.A. Adams near Garnett, Kansas.

1978 - An unusually strong occluded front swept out of the Gulf of Alaska and produced the first April thunderstorm of record at Fairbanks. Pea size hail fell northeast of Fairbanks from thunderstorms whose tops were less than 8000 feet. (The Weather Channel)

1984 - Severe thunderstorms associated with an intense cyclone spawned a total of forty-seven tornadoes in two days from Louisiana to Upper Michigan. The tornadoes killed 16 persons and injured 259 others. (Storm Data)

1986: The Chernobyl nuclear power station in Kiev Ukraine suffered a massive explosion. The radioactive cloud of particles and gas carried westward and northwestward, contaminating large areas of Europe in the following week.

1987 - Twenty-two cities in the central and western U.S. reported new record high temperatures for the date. The afternoon high of 83 degrees at Astoria OR smashed their previous record by 13 degrees. Sacramento CA hit 94 degrees. (The National Weather Summary)

1988 - While Rochester, MN, was blanketed with 13.7 inches of snow, establishing a single storm record for the month of April, Minneapolis MN, just 90 miles away, got only rain. (Storm Data) (The National Weather Summary)

1989 - Thirty-three cities in the central and southeastern U.S. reported record high temperatures for the date. Afternoon highs of 91 degrees at Evansville IN and Nashville TN equalled April records. Thunderstorms produced severe weather from Iowa to Kentucky, with more than ninety reports of large hail and damaging winds. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 90 mph at Berwick IA. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

1990 - Twenty-nine cities from the Carolinas to the Great Lakes Region and western New England reported record high temperatures for the date as readings soared into the 80s and lower 90s. Record high temperatures included 95 degrees at Baltimore MD and 92 degrees at Allentown PA. The record high of 89 degrees at Alpena MI was the third out of six straight record highs for that location, and smashed their previous record for the date by ten degrees. (The National Weather Summary)

1991 - Severe thunderstorms in the central U.S. spawned fifty-five tornadoes from northeastern Texas to Iowa and eastern Nebraska killing twenty-one persons. Early evening thunderstorms over south central Kansas spawned a violent (F-5) tornado whiched traveled 45 miles from southwest of Wichita to north of El Dorado. It killed seventeen persons, including thirteen at the Golden Spur Mobile Home Park in Andover. The tornado also caused 62 million dollars damage to McConnell Air Force Base as it crossed the south side of Wichita. (National Weather Summary

1991:During a severe thunderstorm event, large hail fell over parts of Brown, Spink, Hand, and Buffalo Counties. Both Brown and Hand Counties received hail up to 1.75 inches in diameter.

I think we have too much sand under our soil.  I always water every few days.

But we've had some hard downpours today, it's what I would expect this time of year.  All day rain is extremely rare and might result in flooding so this is better.
