Tonight will be cloudy, breezy, and cool. Some showers are likely. A few distant northern and western suburbs could even see a little snow or sleet.

The week will end on a chilly note. A steady rain will develop tomorrow and continue through Saturday. A general 0.50"-1.50" of rain is likely. Temperatures will top out in the 40s in New York City. The temperature could approach seasonable levels by the end of the weekend and then briefly go above normal early next week. However, before the warmth could become established, another surge of cooler air will push into the region by the middle of next week.

The ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly was +1.3°C and the Region 3.4 anomaly was -0.1°C for the week centered around April 2. For the past six weeks, the ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly has averaged +1.23°C and the ENSO Region 3.4 anomaly has averaged +0.17°C. Neutral ENSO conditions will likely continue through at least late spring.

Early indications are that summer 2025 will be warmer than normal in the New York City and Philadelphia areas. The potential exists for a much warmer than normal summer (more than 1° above normal).

The SOI was -6.85 yesterday.

The preliminary Arctic Oscillation (AO) was +1.061 today.

Based on sensitivity analysis applied to the latest guidance, there is an implied 68% probability that New York City will have a cooler than normal April (1991-2020 normal). April will likely finish with a mean temperature near 52.6° (1.1° below normal).

Liberty you stirred a memory in my aged cranium. I remember, possibly  70’s/80’s, a TV weather show ran a live clip showing large flake snow falling near the top of the Empire State Building. (Apparently it was taken by a visitor as I don’t believe there was a dedicated weather camera in place at that time.) Out side on ground level it was a cold rain. I remember commenting to my family that I don’t envy the parent that has to explain why it’s snowing up there but not down here, I never remember seeing such a demonstration again. Stay well Liberty. As always …

There is a pent house on top of the Nordstrom tower that has a big patio at like 1500’. That patio is the ultimate weather weenies dream. It’s so high you look over the Empire State Building.

Probably get a few inches at 1500’ in this setup.

Don where is all this cold coming from with such a positive AO and most of the country being so warm?

omg it even changed the color of the sand!

all joking aside it's understandable that Sandy pushed sand inland because of its angle of approach and the SE winds.  SE winds are considered our most damaging winds for trees and I wonder how many trees were damaged because of Sandy.

Due to the angle it came inland, how it transitioned basically as it was about to land, from tropical, to a non tropical, but extremely powerful storm. Then how long it stuck around. We may not see that combination again in a long time. We might see something similar, but all those combinations together? That is for smarter people than me to really evaluate.

Maybe we can arrange for the zookeeper to have it during snow events for him to help NYC break 30” average finally.

Snowing here - just wet and cold. Running out of pellets for the stove and firewood is all but gone. Gonna have to suck it up and put the HVAC unit to work if it doesn’t warm up soon. Can’t buy flowers till after Mother’s Day otherwise a random frost kills them. I always hated spring more than any other season.

Not too many years ago. On Memorial Day weekend. From an ULL it was 33 degrees and raining. No snow or ice, but 33°. End of May.

That was a really powerful nor’easter for so late in the season. Had some sleet mix in at times on the north shore of Nassua. Air show at jones beach completely canceled. Pretty much a worst case scenario for MDW.

I have dim memories of this, low 40s and sleet? That entire weekend was horrendous!

Yes spring is a completely useless season. I loved the 80s and 90s because we usually went straight from winter to summer.
