Sunday looks like one of the biggest deviations between the surface and 850 mb temperatures that we have seen in a while. The 850 mb temperatures with full sun and SW to W flow would support highs near 90°. But the clouds, rain, and onshore flow will limit the high temperature potential.

As the atmosphere continues to warm, the 500mb heights have been increasing to record levels. So it leads to weather patterns getting stuck in place over extended periods of time. The trough areas have been shrinking also so we don’t see the really deep troughs like we used to get which were very cold. Even though we had impressive -EPO +PNA -AO blocking this past winter, the cold never was able to approach levels we saw during past winters with similar teleconnections.

This makes sense and why we get longer periods of dry weather and longer periods of wet weather.  As far as the current pattern is concerned, we're going to need a strong push of cold air to drive the moisture south of us so we can clear out and finally get sun back.

Fortunately, Sunday will be the last cloudy and rainy day, a strong push of cold air will drive all of this muck well offshore.

I found an article where it said New York City received about 10" of snow in Central Park on April 07, 1982, nearby suburbs up to 20".  These photos were from April 07, 1982 in my backyard in Union Township.  Judging by the top of the garbage can, we had at least 12", probably more.  Easter was on April 11, 1982.

Looks like a cooler pattern next week before the next warm up mid-April which has been correcting stronger in recent runs.

New run next 70s+ warm up for mid-April

61 / 59  clouds and some showers and storms rolled through earlier.   Mainly cloudy and warm in the 60s today, any larger breaks in the clouds could push 70 in spots. Not a good period for baseball. Cooler Saturday with later in the day rain and showers developing.   Sunday looks similar cloudy cool and showers/drizzle.  Drier and cooler by Monday PM with trough into the northeast 4/8 - 4/12.   Next weekend looks like a return to showers and warmer temps.  Mid month could see cutoff into the northeast which guidance eased on last night but still feasible.  Overall  4/5 - 4/15 looks below normal.

with sunny skies? without sunshine any so-called warm up is meaningless (especially here where we deal with an onshore flow)

JFK: 29 (1995)

Underrated arctic air shot in 1995 around this time, we were only in the 30s during the day with bright sunshine and gusty winds and low to mid 20s at night!! Mid January weather in early April!!

LGA: 76 (2010)
JFK: 73 (2010)

This early heat was a predecessor to our earliest 90 degrees on record (92) on the 7th!!

64 now. Had thunder this morning but only about .1 of rainfall as the storms mostly went south

I had one very close lightning strike. 0.23" here.

I'm not looking forward to the raw day tomorrow, and the cold weather early to mid next week with highs only in the 40s and a cold wind. Thankfully the pattern is looking much better for mid April.

So glad my kids are older and out of sports now.  I hated the first 6 weeks of baseball/softball season.  Nice days always seemed to happen on a non game/practice day, haha.

Yeah I remember how miserable it was when I was a kid and played baseball in April. A tough sport to play in cold weather, and as you said tough for the people in the stands watching.

Who knows what the sky conditions will be that far out. But next week will be cooler before we warm up again for the 3rd week of April. JFK already had the 4th earliest 80 on record. So the warm ups continue to be more impressive than the cooldowns.

Yes that was one magical day, we were in the 80s as late as 5:10 PM before that cold front came through.

I find it really interesting that 1990 had both the earliest and latest 90 degree day (and 2021 is second in both) and both are records that stand out, I doubt 3-13 will ever be bested and 10-14 was only tied.  Nothing else is within 2 weeks of either record!!

Chris, do you have the earliest and latest 90 degrees for JFK too? I wonder if 2002 had the earliest 90 degrees at Central Park.  I'm pretty sure the latest 90 degrees happened in October a few years ago.
