This map wouldve been better IMO if they had % of avg snowfall instead of just a simple departure, because average snowfall over this huge of a region is all over the place. Also, just to point out, with the colder than avg temp departures of this winter in many places, we heard some point out that the latest 30-year averages are warmer than long term. Well, for many areas in the northern half of this map, especially around the Great Lakes, the latest 30-year snow averages are higher than longterm avg (and I believe they are lower than longterm in some of the southern reaches of the map).

If no more measurable snow falls, Detroit will finish with 60% of avg snowfall (using 1991-2020 averages....if using longterm avg, it would be 66% of avg). There is a threat of snow this coming week however. With such widespread snowfall deficits (similar to last decade when we would see widespread snowfall surpluses), you know its going to change soon. Hopefully with an improving Pacific it will be a stormier winter in '25-26.

A few comments... most of the zeros are locations that receive little, if any, snowfall. The exception is Concordia, KS, which averages 19.0" through April 3, but has received only a trace. Eureka and Fresno, in California, are shown as 0 here, but they don't average any snowfall during the year [so it's really an undefined value]. Bakersfield, California apparently averages 0.1" per year, so that is a true 0% [although not particularly significant]. Savannah, Georgia averages 0 snowfall, but has received 1.1" this winter, so I have displayed its percentage of normal as "infinite." This would also be the case for New Orleans and a few locations in northern Florida, but they don't regularly report seasonal snowfall and therefore are not included. Edit: The Concordia, KS result appears to be due to missing snowfall reports this winter. The Climate Report does reflect these values, but it looks like snowfall wasn't observed. Most locations in Kansas, including nearby Topeka, were slightly above the normal snowfall. The most El-Nino-esque La Nina winter we've had in a while... Some aspects were el nino-esque, but not all. There was more sustained winter than youd expect up here in a nino (although some weak ninos are very wintry). Weve heard multiple times in previous years, and imo it was true in 2019-20 & 2022-23, that the total snowfall was misleading for the winter, making it look better than it was. Well, I have to say that 2024-25 was the first winter since 2014-15 where the winter was actually better than the snowfall number would indicate. nvck Posted yesterday at 08:06 PM Share Posted yesterday at 08:06 PM not sure how many of you know about the ICECHIP hail research project this summer - a hail study led by CMU & NIU, with like 20 other orgs involved. I'll be going out to the front range/central plains for like 6 weeks this summer working on it. There's this website: http://icechip.niu.edu if you want to learn more, or feel free to ask me any questions, super excited about it

WestMichigan
Some very light snow flakes falling this morning. Not accumulating but a couple of months ago this would have been mood flakes. Now it is just a nuisance given the time of year and prior warmth.
