February 19-20 Major Winter Storm Threat

 Share

Recommended Posts

From GSP: (regarding Thursday AM)

CAMs have picked up on the development of a 700-850mb frontogenesis
band in association with the secondary wave of snow that should
form. In this case, localized snowfall rates could become
moderate to heavy at times, with somewhere between Greenville,
SC to Charlotte, NC and the I-77 corridor possibly picking up a
surprise inch of snowfall. Most places will likely see a tenth
of an inch or so on elevated surfaces, but the dynamics are in
place for a localized deformation band to set up over somewhere
in the Piedmont of the CFWA. If this happens to occur outside of
the current Winter Weather Advisory area, don`t be surprised if
a short-fused Winter Weather Advisory will be need for some of
the Upstate SC counties. The latest HREF suggests that this would
likely occur in the CLT Metro area.

It's all snow in Charlotte.

Charlotte, out of all the places, should have an all snow event this season. The Triangle already got the snow event last month and early February. The Coast got theirs in early February and the WNC mountains gets it all the time.

Charlotte always shut out due to our location, varied geographic, and urban heat island effect.

Yeah this winter has sucked for Charlotte we have been too far north/south/ and east of every snow so far this year.

This mess is a season of snow season has been insulting and disrespectful

Charlotte is the largest metro in the US without our own NWS forecast office or adequate radar coverage although we have a top 10 busiest airport in the world. Thus our local forecasts from the GSP NWS forecast office are mostly wrong or horribly off due the lack of radar coverage and forecasting hole as a result. I've long said that the TCLT radar is crap for forecasting because it's for primary use of air traffic. We can't even get a decent mesoscale discussion (MD) advisory for weather conditions for the area due to the forecasting hole.

GSP can't accurately assess what is weather conditions or real time sampling that are transpiring in this bi-state massive region that is Charlotte.

Finally, far too many on this subforum here while always talking about NC weather that is 9 out 10 times that it's the Triangle or Raleigh like Charlotte is irrelevant. IRL Charlotte is a way larger region than the Triangle. I see why so few of us post because this is annoying.

I’m in SE GA and know of only 3 others from the general area who (semi) actively post. And I’m much further than you from RDU/GSO. So, take your situation and multiply it by 100. That’s my situation. Charlotte may be irrelevant but Savannah/Waycross hardly even exist relatively speaking! But I’m not complaining and have no choice/accept it as the higher interest follows the locations of most posts: RDU/GSO. Fortunately, I enjoy tracking wx/models in the SE regardless of where, what kind of wx, etc. Doesn’t have to be IMBY wintry, which is obviously the most exciting but rare. (I never had a chance with this storm.) Otherwise, I’d hardly be posting. I like to track temps, rain, wind, and other wx too. I enjoy following model trends and evaluating models due to my statistical background.

So, the reason Charlotte has missed out on the snow is because the NWS is located at GSP?

I would be frustrated too. I live in Northern Wake County, and it absolutely seems like the majority of posters are from RDU or the Triad. I’m sorry if we’re being annoying. I’m really hoping for one more event just for the Charlotte metro. You guys definitely are way overdue for a great storm!

No. My point is the weather forecasting has been consistently wrong because of the GSP NWS forecasting office has no business doing weather forecasting for the Charlotte area counties in neither state (NC and SC). Charlotte is nearly 100 miles away from their radar or physical forecasting station. GSP needs to stick to weather forecasting for the Upstate SC, Asheville area counties in the WNC mountains, and extremely NE GA.

As result, this city is basically doing weather forecasting via Brad Panovich of WCNC.

Fun fact, GSP actually asks WSOC-TV to utilize their local Barron radar from time to time for ground truth of weather conditions in Charlotte.

That is very bad weather forecasting because it's shouldn't be like that.

This seems to be an odd thing to complain about. We can't control where the people live that happen to join American Weather and like to post. And, naturally, people like to talk about the weather in their backyards. Apparently, the RDU area has a much greater membership on this site, per capita, than does Charlotte. It is what it is. If you want more talk about Charlotte, you can create the content yourself or convince your neighbors to join and post content. I would encourage both options.

Actually if oxygen in the room is always sucked out then others from one area then it will not encourage others to participate.

It's not my sole job to ask others offline to join in to discuss weather discussion of us all across in the Carolinas (NC & SC). It's supposed to be welcoming environment to  say such things not defensive about engaging others in other areas of the SE forum to feel included in weather forecasting discussions.

FYI, I'm originally from Birmingham and lived in Atlanta beforehand. I still try include and engage with others in AL & GA in the forum with major weather events.

I've kept the entire forum abreast of a major tornado outbreak that occurred in Southern AL & western/NW GA in 2023.

But it is my job to see that things stay on topic. I waited for you to stop on your own but it seems you might need some help.  Hopefully all you need is a request to stay on topic.  Consider this that request.

And honestly, the Triangle is a much more scientific driven metropolitan area than is Charlotte. While life sciences and computer sciences don't translate directly to meteorology, there's more of a connection there than the finance/banking/insurance of Charlotte. And many scientifically driven people will be interested in more fields than just the one they graduated in/work in. I work in biotech but me and tons of my coworkers have a ball model watching and putting out predictions. Same at my last gig. It's not a bad thing, it just is what it is- metros have different industries. The Triad just has some of the best NC metro winter odds so it makes sense that they would have a large representation vs a metro on the South Carolina border.

Plenty of people from Charlotte post here when the they're forecasted to get weather events. But I agree, Charlotte in general is pretty irrelevant.

I see people from the Charlotte area post all the time. I think you are not seeing many of them today because they got the screw job...so far!
