Maybe I got it mixed up with another storm. But I do remember a major double digit storm where Bob Ryan went low and stayed low, it was almost like he totally disengaged from it all.

Feb '83 perhaps. In the early going he was influencing other TV mets to stay low.

I think WaPo humor columnist Gene Weingarten  Tony Kornheiser named him "Lyin Ryan" and it stuck, referencing it on several occasions.

I always bought those weather almanacs he wrote, and they were pretty good.

Don't wanna say anything bad though; he worked hard. We tease because we love.

My parents I think adored him to a certain degree. He was definitely the face of weather for me as a kid. And even then, their nickname for him was "Boner Bob" lmao

it had to do with how excited he'd get on air

Doug hill used to live near me, met him a few times at local charity events.  Nice guy, I have pics of me and him somewhere.  I think he moved to NC when he retired, but passed away a couple years ago iirc.

can confirm that's a great family. I'm the same age as his youngest son. Went to JMU with them both

I think it may have been Tony Kornheiser who gave him the name. He was a humor columnist for the post back then as well and used to rip Bob all the time. I can’t imagine they’d be on speaking terms if they met now.

Ah! I think you're right. It was Kornheiser. I knew it couldn't be Dave Barry, (of South FL) who preceded them both; (in syndication).

HRRR, which we know is an excellent model, has been getting a bit more aggressive with some snow for northern MD and with freezing rain to the west this evening (before everything changes over).  RAP, which is equally excellent, is generally showing the same.  I'm skeptical as is the 3k NAM.

33.0/30 here with some mist.

Indeed Feb '83.  I remember the 11pm newscast that Thursday night.  I beleive he was forecasting 6 - 8".  But I distinctly remember him saying "kids, you better do your homework."  I was so deflated.  That next morning I woke up around 7 AM and there was probably 7 - 8 inches already on the ground.  We ended up with 32" by 5 PM that day.

And we didn't go back to school for a week.

Pann also infamously went too low in Snowmageddon part 1, though not nearly as bad as 2016.

He got off for years on being contrarian - he would literally forecast the opposite of the modeling.  When modeling showed a no snow or small snow event, he would grab the outlier snowiest model and push that. And, yes, he totally underforecast a few of the biggest area storms, again, I think because it was his shtik.
