What has happened to forecasting recently? This is the second “winter storm warning” we have had this year for 5-10 and we ended up with barely 3.5. The only over performer was back in December with a “dusting to inch” that resulted in 5.5.

Depends which time the forecast was issued.  I never saw an official 5" to 10" from the NWS, but who knows?

JFK is usually the lowest of the 3 climate sites, I expect that to be reflected by this storm as well. It’s funny because the way NYC is spread out, I feel like they are all equally accurate for their respective areas. JFK is usually indicative of south shore Queen/BK, Staten Island. Central Park is usually indicative of Manhattan and Bronx. And LaGuarida is usually indicative of the city’s largest borough, Queens. So I guess they each have some value but Central Park definitely under measures most of the time

Yeah I agree they all have their place. For me, in the Bx I find I tend to match up with LGA better, espically when E to NE winds are a big factor. It better captures any Sound influence which will effect some eastern areas of the boro as well. It's also significantly closer to me than CPK (as the crow flies), it's easier to get in the same snow bands etc. LGA obs on avg are actually more similar year round, especially in Spring with back door cold fronts.

Hope we agree that the NAM and SREF are not always best... certainly not last night.  This time the EC-EPS kind of nailed it, Canadian and GFS not too bad either, as opposed to last Thursday when the NAM/SREF prevailed.

That is why pronouncements need to be counted in uncertainty.

CoCoRaHs for last nights snow attached. Please click for clarity and unless your amount differs by more than 20% from these numbers, please accept this as reasonable. image.thumb.png.f2b74c2be13102ae4b1c651073340b65.pngimage.thumb.png.6081c24e338838a0dc30815e56ca2182.png

JFK is usually the lowest only in mixed storms, in all snow event noreasters it's usually the highest (Feb 83, PD2, Jan 2016).

LGA is in a commercial area and usually hotter than the others

4” on the nose. 3rd event of at least a few inches, plus a white christmas, and a below avg (yeah yeah i know still warm as hell, not the point rjay lol) winter so far. Throw in a double digit storm at some point and this winter goes to a B+ or A- quickly.

Everyone thinks it’s easy until they have to do it for a living, then it’s not so easy.

Eye balled about 3-4 here in Eastern Bergen county before the changeover compacted it down.

Was beautiful to see it really coming down hard for a couple of hours last night, hardest I’ve seen in about 3 years, and wasn’t bad shoveling as it came off in nice chunks.

Hope we agree that the NAM and SREF are not always best... certainly not last night.  This time the EC-EPS kind of nailed it, Canadian and GFS not too bad either, as opposed to last Thursday when the NAM/SREF prevailed.

That is why pronouncements beed to be counted in uncertainty.

CoCoRaHs for last nights snow attached. Please click for clarity and unless your amount differs by more than 20% from these numbers, please accept this as reasonable.

We're spot on with you on Sparta.
I measured 2.4", broken out with my best estimates as follows:
1" of snow
1.2" of sleet,
0.1" ZR
0.1" snow to finish.

Not all that much snow overall this winter, but I’ve enjoyed the season more than many in the past where we had more. Feels like we had snow on the ground since 12/20 and lots of little events to track. Pretty cold too. I give it a solid B right now.

Many kids wish you were their teacher lol

4” on the nose. 3rd event of at least a few inches, plus a white christmas, and a below avg (yeah yeah i know still warm as hell, not the point rjay lol) winter so far. Throw in a double digit storm at some point and this winter goes to a B+ or A- quickly.

This month could easily change this winter from a D to B+/A- but we'll see.

wow so the lightning actually hit the snow and melted it? how fascinating!

To my understanding, it was more that the latent heat from the sheer amount of lighting in the atmosphere was enough to cause the heat to melt the snow.
