Discussion-OBS Weekend Feb 8-9 Another mainly 12 hour snow-ice event possibly changing to rain before ending Sunday. NYC-LI-S of I78 on the edge?

At my age, I should be more mature in handling living in a "screw" zone.  I understand this was to be a marginal event, after an initial Winter Storm Watch was issued.  The storm did perform pretty much as advertised (based on the most recent 24-36 hour forecasts).  Newark, 10 miles away from central Union County received 3.0".  Garwood got 1" of snow, some sleet (not the sleet fest as advertised), and then was pretty much over.  Perhaps I am discontent, seeing that the Tuesday, Thursday and coming weekend storms are beginning to unravel.  ElmerRed.gif.302d73e272cc791fc8e8a4a1420966ef.gif

I managed less than that just across the river. Just went outside; rain and slush. Really got shafted this time. CNJ was not the place to be. Never expected much but surprised areas to the east did much better.

I wrote this before the storm even started that eastern areas might do better because cold air was banked to the east, so the same thing that normally causes suppression would actually help in making it snow longer.  The further east you went the more snow you'd get.

So, during Nemo (Feb 2013), when the two streams actually phased, there was so much volatility and upward motion that it created a significant amount of lighting. This led to so much latent heat release that thunder snow turned to thunder sleet for nearly an hour. It was not the layers of the atmosphere, it was the actual lightning causing the snow to melt and then it refroze before hitting the ground. I always found that fascinating.

wow so the lightning actually hit the snow and melted it? how fascinating!

Come to central Union county NJ, you'll see UNDERPERFORMING!

You should see my area in Western Somerset County. Not sure if it's underperforming since I only thought I'd get 1-3" and we have 1", but it's 100% sleet and ice. We never went to all snow, maybe 10% snow and 90% sleet for a few minutes early on.

Weird storm here, skating rink

Hard ice glaze from freezing rain on top of maybe an inch and a half of sleet.  Maybe the first time I would not have the strength to clear my walkout and car to move it for parking spot clearing.  Salting would not help at this depth without some rising temperatures and melting and maybe sun.  Nobody going anywhere in this development until that happens.

Total disappointment here. Was forecast between 7 and 10 inches. I didn’t go outside yet to measure but I’m eyeballing 3 maybe 4 at best.

I keep hearing how forecasting has gotten so much better but I disagree. Even 6 hours before the storm arrived NWS never changed anything.

.

We received half of what was forecasted. Heaviest precip stayed south.

What has happened to forecasting recently? This is the second “winter storm warning” we have had this year for 5-10 and we ended up with barely 3.5. The only over performer was back in December with a “dusting to inch” that resulted in 5.5.

It’s weather. Weather varies. 3.5” is not a bad bust for your area. There has been much worse.

Enjoy what you got.
